3000 passengers is too many for me

I am happy to have visited Iceland and Greenland, and to have seen the incredible Aurora Borealis. I will never sail on a ship this big again. The ship is not built for the number of passengers, meaning long wait times for meals and shows (if you can even get in) and to get on and off the ship. Service was excellent. Food was mediocre, room was fine, except the uncomfortable bed and pillows, and entertainment was generally good.

We had a super time on the Caribbean Princess on our last sailing- Southampton to New York. We met lots of nice people from all over and we especially enjoyed our dining room experiences with the same wait staff every day. The ports were well chosen and our stops in Iceland and meeting with friends for those days made the trip especially enjoyable! Caribbean Princess was clean, the cuisine was excellent. Staff was very professional. We have already booked our next cruise with Princess.

I'd successfully avoided cruises all my life until my daughter booked one for us (as a gift to her mother and me). I have never had such a relaxing time. We were (surprisingly to me) fully in-charge of which activities we chose to do. The cruise was fantastic and relaxing, and we were able to adventure on our own at the ports of call (my preference). The food was perfect and (most importantly) healthy! I was worried that I'd gain weight and that didn't happen.

Crew unknowledgeable much of the time. The golf simulator was used as a portrait studio. Internet cafe was wi-fi only and noisy. As a frequent Celebrity guest comparing the two cruise lines, Princess lost every time.

The ship was lovely and  most of the staff was efficient and pleasant! I was unaware that the spa is actually run by an outside company! The cruise line will not help you if they mess up your charges, which they seem to do frequently. If you are a Spa girl too, make sure on Royal Princess with Lotus Spa you check your receipts and room charges well in advance of disembarking so you have time to dispute and correct the charge errors. Even if they have corrected them, check your final statement well in advance! There is a "clause" that states all charges must be disputed prior to leaving the ship!

We have cruised on the Caribbean Princess in the past so we knew what to expect. For an older ship, the maintenance couldn't be questioned. This ship did a nice job of accommodating a wide range of age groups. There's a generous selection of activities each day so, as usual, we weren't able to see and do everything we found on the the daily Patter. The food met our expectations from our previous experience. We chose the Anytime Dining option and were able to sit in the same area each night which meant we had the same helpful, fun service staff for several of the nights. We wouldn't hesitate to cruise on the Caribbean Princess again.

This was our families first cruise and what a great experience it was! The ship was clean from every aspect that we saw and well maintained. The only real complaint we would have is the blocked off areas of the pool deck so that the flooring could be changed over. With this blocked off it made less pool seating and got really crowded. We were blessed with amazing help from anyone that worked on this cruise ship. Our waiters, Rudy and Abel, were so much fun and truly made our dining experience in the Palm Dining Room great fun each night. They catered to our every need/want and do so with a smile. They talked with our family as if we were the only ones in the room and made us feel special. Nazaro was our room attendant and he was more than willing to help out in anyway possible. Since we were traveling for people in one room he had to take down and put up the beds everyday and he did so without a hesitation.

Caribbean Princess is a large ship (3,200+ passengers) but with the amenities to take care of everyone. Sailed last half of August out of Southampton and that was both good and bad (sort of). Last of British holidays meant more families and children than retired cruisers might be used to but the ship did a good job of having activities to keep the kiddies busy. Good was the fact that the rest of Europe was also on holiday meaning the cities were almost devoid of traffic. This was our fifth Princess cruise and were not disappointed. I thought the Horizon Court was done more nicely than on the Island Princess, our previous cruise to the Panama Canal. We had reserved dinner seating and the menus were fabulous, as always. The staff were, simply, great ambassadors. Out table staff were a perfect team, taking only the first dinner to anticipate our every need. Our steward always greeted us when we left and came back to our cabin and our cabin was always done just right..

Nice Ship, Bad Departure Port

By: D&G

Reviewed on: 19 Dec 2015

The Caribbean Princess is a nice ship. Clean, friendly and what you would expect of Princess in general. The departure port was Houston which was selected due to its close proximity to my parents who live in San Antonio. They wanted to drive rather than to fly which was fine with us. The port operates in a dry county as I understand so the entire embarkation day only furnished very bad county regulated drinks. The port is also in the heart of refinery row so its pretty unattractive. I understand that Princess is not going to renew their port arrangement in the coming year. The ports were Costa Maya, Roatan and Belize. We went on a Maya ruin tour with Elvis (real name) who is the best tour guide ever. The ship food was ok. The steakhouse was very good. The Italian restaurant was also very good. All public areas were very clean and service was prompt. Get the beverage package- its worth it based on the cost of a single drink. The captain was also great.

Reviewed on: 04 Jan 2016

*Our trip was delayed so we were BEHIND and LATE the whole trip. I am all for safety of the ship and passengers, but it was VERY frustrating that we were LATE getting into Cozumel (stop one), LATE and had to try to tender in rough seas, instead of docking at Roatan Honduras (stop two), and we aborted Belize completely (stop three). It was added frustration that RCL and Carnival had 3 boats docked at Roatan because they “got there earlier”, and that RCL Liberty and Vision BOTH got into Belize when we aborted completely. *Cruise Director (Bob Leininger) was very arrogant, rude and condescending to the passengers. He had no creative alternatives ON THE SHIP since we missed 2 of 3 ports. *We never saw captain (Nick Nash) or met him. He was very short, impersonal, and not really apologetic, due to the missed ports. *Crew was unhelpful at times, "not my job". *This cruise felt like a low budget, no frills, plain vanilla, uncaring staff and crew from the top down, trip that fell flat.

Beautiful Ship

Reviewed on: 29 Jan 2016

The ship was beautiful and food selections were good. We loved the mini suite as it had a balcony and extra seating area with couch and chair and coffee table plus 2 TV's. We rarely saw our steward. Some of the staff were snobby and pretentious at the service desk, but I did not have to deal with them very often--some shop staff were excellent and some were not very accommodating or friendly. I used the spa and although I had a great massage therapist (2 deep tissue massages), the prices are very high and there is a lot of pressure to buy products from them--next time I won't be surprised by this and will just say "No". I wouldn't recommend this ship for younger adults since there wasn't a lot to do for this population--most of the cruisers were like ourselves and older or retired--that was a good thing for us because the ship was quiet and not rowdy but probably would not appeal to the younger generation (my sons who are in their late 20's complained about this).

However, as I find on many ships the chef just salts their soups way too much. Otherwise the dining room was a good experience. We didn't care for the Crown Grill, speciality steak house. Service is slow, it took almost an hour to get our first appetizer. We thought the steaks were as good as what they served in the dining room, without the $25 service charge. We have been on almost 50 cruises, with various cruise lines. We have always had great success with Princess. However, we feel that this ship, the Caribbean Princess was put in the Port of Houston to finish up the cruises before the port closes. Appearance of the ship, fair, food, poor, no variety in the buffet. Crew, efficient, business like, unfriendly. We booked this cruise partially because of the itinerary, and we have never sailed on this ship before. We were informed 1st. day at sea that the ship had a (slow engine) and we would not be able to make two of our ports because of this. In talking with passengers who had back to back cruises, they also related they had the same problem last week. Other passengers that had sailed on the Caribbean Princes in the past 90 days, said they had the same problems. Why would you put a ship that was not sea worthy in service and keep it there knowing it had a problem? We were greatly disappointed in all aspects of the cruise.

We enjoyed our trip (fall foliage) on the Caribbean Princess. The ship is quite well run by all concerned. We would have preferred to have the news sheets that many cruise lines provide. We did have fairly long lines, probably inevitable in a larger ship (3000 passengers). The shore excursions were in general well run. The putting green was fairly minimal (five short holes, but with character). We would have preferred a decent lecture program. In 11 evenings there were only two production shows by the singers and dancers. Our location (Plaza deck, near the middle) was very convenient. Fortunately, "Formal" nights were not rigorously enforced - a tie and sweater was enough. The food was generally of a high quality.

The whole ship just had a worn out look. The staff was very happy and they were Nice as they could be but totally unhelpful. The best example I can think of to show this was when we went to the purser desk and asked for help with our return airline tickets, which we had purchased through princess, they did not know what to do didn't know if they could help so sent an email to the main office. They told us we would hear back in a couple of days. A couple of days? By then it was too late to change our tickets. Also they told us one of the excursions that we wanted to take with our friends was full. When our friends returned, they said the bus was barely 2/3 full. And I think the most amazing example of all was when I went to the buffet and asked for a knife to butter my scone they said we don't have any knives!!

I did notice they remodeled the buffet, very modern and sleek with 2 add on specialty restaurants that was quite reasonable at $12 pp , dinner only. We did try one of the , Plank bbq and quite tasty and plenty of meat and something different than the dining room. Food in the main dining was sometimes a hit or miss. Best night was our second formal night, escargots, lobster tails and prawns and dessert, cannot remember now. Cabins had upgraded the mattresses and sheets, very comfy. We had good excursions, some provided by Princess, others sourced on our own. We had mass confusion one morning when they did not effectively manage excursion departures, and 100's of people ended up standing on the pier waiting for buses. Bathroom smelled of mildew when we arrived, but steward replaced the shower curtain with a new one, and that made all the difference. Beds were perfectly comfortable. Princess Cruises impressed me in the follow-up of Caribbean hurricanes with their generosity in matching financial gifts provided by passengers and crew, pledging to provide for needs where they are most needed, on our recent cruise. Rather than simply throw money at a devastated area, they pledge to look at long-term needs, and I was more than happy to donate. Princess staff consistently impress me with their dedication and service, and if a Princess crew member is ever having a bad day, they certainly don't let it show!

We are normally Royal Caribbean cruisers (about 7 times with them) and this was a mistake. The only really nice thing was the staff as they were excellent. Did not like the ship at all as it seemed cramped and tight. One of the worst things was that there was almost no where to sit and relax anywhere on the ship outside of your room. The MiniSuite was ok but nothing over the top. The bathroom appeared to be a bit "tired" in spite of a recent redo of the entire ship. We hated the layout of the ship as did all of our group as one had to go up and down and back and across to get to certain places on the ship - terrible design. Food was ok and we tried the 2 upscale restaurants and they were ok but no comparison to those on Royal Caribbean. Did not bother with entertainment as the descriptions seemed nothing that great. Cannot address any tours since we have been to the Caribbean several times did not have any desired to book tours.

I have been on over 70 cruises and have never experienced such reliable and fast internet. On the first week of the 27 day cruise we had the opportunity of meeting Gavin MacLeod. Gavin is an interesting man who enjoys talking to people. He autographed his books each with a personal message. Our itinerary was changed twice because of tropical storm Gordon and Hurricane Isaac but our captain Marco Fortezze always kept us in calm waters. The trip through the new Panama Canal locks was enjoyable and since we anchored in the lake and went back through the same locks we were offered numerous excursions. On our excursion we got to see our ship pass back through the locks. Since my wife is no fan of hot weather we took an enjoyable air-conditioned train ride across Panama.

The canal is a marvel of engineering and the highlight of our trip. Some people on the cruise complained that there wasn’t enough to do on board. There were more pool side activities and live music at the pool on our Royal Caribbean cruise and that would have been nice on the Caribbean Princess versus recorded music most of the time. However, we preferred the quiet pool at the back of the ship and other quiet places around the ship, versus the noisy packed 2 main pools. The food and wait staff were very good. Cruise was supposed to be super safe for Covid since everyone had to prove fully vaccinated and boosted plus negative when boarding ship. Very few ports and only 2 in sizable ports in 16 days. Still Covid ward of 40+ cabins was full after 8 days aboard ship. Captain made half-hearted attempt to stem the epidemic by announcing just once that we should wear masks at all times. Most passengers never heard it. Result was that many folks, (me included) tested positive after disembarkation. Captain also decided to skip the most important port (Nuuk) based on a weather report a day in advance which turned out to be totally inaccurate. "High winds" in Nuuk turned out to be 11 mph.
