We first sailed on the Dawn Princess in 1990, 10 days in the Caribbean, followed by 28 days around Australia, 16 days from Singapore to Beijing and lastly 12 days around the British Isles. We have sailed on other ships as well but Princess is still our favourite and would recommend others, as we have done previously in the past, to give it a try.

I know there is no one more annoying than a reformed smoker but I thought it was a little overwhelming at times. The casino and most of the deck that it is on reeks of smoke. The covered area by the pool was another area that we avoided because of the smokers. Other than that the cruise and everything about it was great.

The staff was friendly and helpful.  The entertainment was better than expected.  The ship was kept clean but needs a little refreshing.  We wish there were fewer days at sea and more ports.  Australia and New Zealand were amazing and we are very glad we were able to experience them.

The ship was beautiful, but starting to age. Steam room did not work for 8 of the nine days of the trip, and no alternative was offered. The food was exceptional, but we felt a little rushed to get seated and to finish up before the next seating. Breakfast in the dining room we did not have the option of sitting with just our friends but had to eat at large tables that they wanted to fill up. Finally realized we got more variety and choice of seating by going to the buffet for breakfast. The cabinet was great. We loved that we were able to get one with a window.

Great Crew and staff

Wonderful 27(28) days around Japan. Activities on board were poorly planned and the shows were repeated 3 times as were the menus. The line considered this cruise 3 back to back but we had bought it as a Grand Adventure and expected more variety. The food at the buffet was excellent. The Shore Excursions were superb. We commend the crew and staff for a job well done during the two typhoons that hit Japan in this period of time. They were very professional and responsive to the various needs. We will definitely travel with and recommend Princess again

We have cruised on the Diamond Princess previously. Ship remains clean and well maintained. Dining room crew is great. One thing that I do miss on this ship is that they do not have a 24 hour International Cafe- it's nice to be able to grab a little bite at 1am if wanted instead of calling room service.

All announcements were in Japanese and English and the menu in the main dining rooms were half nd half with all the 'favorites' being Japanese. The portions were smaller because of the Japanese also. The service was, as usual, very good and the entertainment leaned towards the Japanese. The cruise director had a 'Japanese Social Hostess' repeating his remarks during the evening and during (what I call) the Repeaters Party. Jesse had advised me about the two-language system and it was very interesting to see how Asian people cruise. Formal night we had a number of kimonos and they were beautiful.

Circumnavigating Japan

By: SenorG

Reviewed on: 10 Sep 2017

We recently completed a cruise on the Diamond Princess, which circumnavigated Japan. The first part of the cruise circuled northern Japan, and the second part southern Japan. The cruise was very educational, and enjoyable. We visited Tsuruga on the 2nd half of the cruise. We were delighted to be the first large cruise ship to visit Tsuruga. Everywhere we visited in Tsuruga Prefecuter, we enjoyed special treatment. Prior to leaving the citizenry performed a folkloric show at the port. All of the passengers were touched and moved by our reception in Tsuruga. The passengers on board were from many nations, including a large contingent of Japanese voyagers. The ship tours were generally good, and conducted by English speaking guides. We learned some Japanese phrases, which made the voyage quite enjoyable. The food in the dining rooms was good, although the food in the Horizon Court was below what we enjoy on other cruise lines. This was our 2nd cruise on the Diamond.

We just got home from a cruise around Hokkaido on the Diamond Princess. Although we lost a day of the cruise due to Typhoon Talim, our 7-day cruise was very smooth. This was my 29th cruise on Princess and 51st cruise overall and I found that the crew from Captain Todd McBain to the dining room servers and the cabin stewards were the BEST I have ever experienced.

Diamond Princess- Diamond "in the rough"-Great trip with some rough edges

By: HappySailor1

Reviewed on: 25 Aug 2018

This was a relatively large passenger ship with around 2,700 passengers. The best part was the itinerary which was during three of the main annual Japanese summer festivals. These were all great experiences and all different in their own right. Was absolutely the highlight of the trip. Princess is highly organized in the logistics and timeliness of their shore excursions as well as embarkation and disembarkation. It was helpful to go on the ship's excursions as Japan is a difficult country to navigate for first time Westerners due to language barriers and transportation considerations around the country. The staff and service throughout the ship were mostly all outstanding and very attentive. The show productions were very entertaining with very talented singers & dancers. The food however was not a highlight. In the main dining room, the western food options were often bland in flavor and the meats were not the highest quality as compared to other cruise lines.

This was my 9th cruise with Princess Cruise. I am satisfied enough to continue to use Princess Cruise. However, this Hokkaido Russia cruise was not the Princess Cruise quality standards - Russia land tour, passenger handling services on board, food, onboard programs, When I compared with the past eight cruises. The overall quality of Princess Cruise was definitely down.

Unfortunately we had some very rough weather which caused problems for us, however The ship and staff were very good. My husband’s electric scooter was damaged going down a very rough gangway. I was not impressed by the ship’s attitude to damage caused as a result of their equipment. Their electrical technician repaired part of the damage but the ship accepted no liability for the damage nor offered to help us with shore excursions. We were only able to go close to the port area on the second half of our cruise as we couldn’t fold the scooter to go into a bus or taxi. We will not be cruising again because of the problems we experienced due to the weather conditions. The ship was unable to go into two scheduled ports because of high winds and rough seas. We can’t risk my husband losing his balance and falling again due to these conditions. He might not be so lucky next time!! As a result we have cancelled the four future cruises we had already booked with Princess Cruises.
