We had a balcony this time and really enjoyed it.   We have taken our kids and spouses on cruises and they had a fabulous time. Now we are hopping to take friends and in a few years grand kids.

We had a lovely 10 day cruise on the Grand to Mexico. Service was impeccable throughout the trip and we so enjoyed our upgrade to a suite. The bathroom, especially, was so big, with double sinks and separate shower and jacuzzi tub, that it felt more like being in a hotel room than a cruise cabin. The shows were great and the whole experience was lovely. Loreto was a new stop for us and the best of the Mexican ports.

This cruise on the Grand Princess, a perfect-sized ship, was a relaxing round trip from San Francisco, with sail away at sunset under the Golden Gate bridge. We liked the ship, especially the updates to the Lido which provided some quiet dining areas. Food was good to very good and service was very good as well. The departure port was a nice twist on the normal Mexican Riviera, making it 10 days instead of 7. Entertainment was good

Princess Continues to be a Great Cruise Line

By: Petaluma Traveler

Reviewed on: 07 Jul 2016

Just got back from a 10-day cruise to Alaska on the Grand Princess. The itinerary was great: Victoria, Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Glacier Bay. The ship was still fresh after all the years in service. The International Cafe is a great place to get a quick bite of food while watching the entertainment in the Piazza. Vines has a wonderful by-the-glass wine list. Our dinner in Sabatini's was good, but I have enjoyed it more on other ships. We also ate in the Crown Grill Steakhouse and the one caveat is that if you want your steak rare or medium rare confirm with your server what that looks like to the chef. We find the beef to always be cooked more than we would like. We had a Penthouse Suite, located mid-ship on Caribe. The room was great with plenty of space and amenities. The balcony was outstanding: two lounge chairs, a table for four and four chairs. It made cruising Glacier Bay a wonderful experience. One thing to beware of: there is no center staircase.

The food was average for a cruise ship but the staff aboard was for the most part above average. The biggest drawback was on formal nights the photographers blocked the elevator areas and would not even acknowledge a person in a wheel chair, making me miss at leas two elevators to get to my destination to which I was late due the the rudeness of the photographers. I did report it to the photo manager and she had me report it to customer services, who asked me to report it to the photo manager. I don't think it ever got reported to the corporate headquarters. Other than that we enjoyed the cruise and the ship more than the previous cruise on the same ship.

First of all our cabin was the smallest balcony cabin we have ever had. So the cruise didn't start out good. We also found the food wasn't up to what we had previously enjoyed on other Princess cruises. The new system of cleaning your hands at the entrance to the buffet is a joke. I expect that only about 25 per cent of the people use the sink. They certainly never wash their hands if they are returning to the buffet and I expect that some people used the washrooms before going back to the buffet.

We had a good time but the Grand Princess is no longer grand. The ship is in need of cosmetic repair. The food was average and certainly not up to the standards we have experienced in the past on a Princess cruise. The entertainment except for one evening was very average and not that entertaining. The art and excursion lectures were very good and were very entertaining and educational. The room steward was great. The staff on the ship was also excellent. The bed in the room was really good. But we have really had better cruise experiences on our previous Princess cruises.

Ship is OK. Cabin OK (couch no). Food was ave. at best. Even the fine dining at night wasn't that good for food judging from past cruises. There was a lot of sickness/flu on the ship (guessing 1/2 ship was sick). The first 4 days cruising to Hawaii got to be boring. The 4 days going to the islands were good, except that just being at a port for 1 day and not there long enough wasn't good. The 4 days going back we both got the flu really bad. I was quarantined to my cabin after visiting the ship's doctor. That cost over $400 and my wife's bill was over $100. Didn't really leave our cabin for 4 days, until back to San Francisco. Not Fun! Too many elderly people with all kinds of illnesses. With so many people in such a confined space, the ship is a medical nightmare. Going thru buffet with people sneezing, coughing and touching everything wasn't a good situation. Would I do this cruise again? NO. We've been home just about 2 weeks and I'm still not well, coughing a lot.

Princess needs to raise the bar for its cruises. Get with the program other ships have upgraded to. Don’t nickel and dime for sodas, specialty coffee, Pay employees so guests don’t have to supplement their income with tips. We prefer to tip those we interface with. Princess is not a 5 star cruise company I would grade them a 4. The food is very average and very little flexibility in ordering something not on the menu. Princess is on the same level as Holland America. We have travelled on most cruise lines and have found with the bigger is better size of the ships service from food, to activities, to excursions has declined. We now prefer inclusive fares and smaller ships.
