The ship was dressed for Christmas. Very festive. Christmas carols in the Piazza. It was a great cruise. The food was adequate, always enough to eat, sometimes too much. Many children on board and we are seniors, usually like the surroundings a little more quiet. Would we go again at this time of year, you betcha. The best part was having breakfast on the veranda every morning. We had a great cruise.

Food was excellent, entertainment was excellent.  We had chosen our cabin on Plaza Deck as we have many times before, but this time the cabin was located just over the stabilizers and when the sea was rough, the noise was almost unbelievable.  Even when in port, they were running a pump non-stop, presumably running city water aboard.  This was also just beneath our cabin, so it became impossible to even have a nap in the daytime when in port.  On our 2nd cruise we were upgraded to a balcony cabin on Caribe Deck as an answer to our complaints about all the noise.   The 2nd cruise did not have enough sea days and so was very tiring.  Something I will avoid in future, if possible. The Captains Circle Cocktail party for platinum & elite passengers was always held from 5 - 7 pm and as our dinner time was 5:30 pm we were never able to attend.  I would suggest this timing could be alternated occasionally.

Ruby Princess Mexican Riviera 10-27-18

Reviewed on: 16 Nov 2018

Compared to a competing cruise line for a comparable price the Ruby Princess room was small and the shower microscopic. Our room steward was fantastic. The buffet was a two on a scale of five. Limited selections and quality just OK, nothing bad but just OK. We went once for breakfast and lunch on the first day after boarding. After that we avoided the buffet. Entertainment outside of the theatre was very poor. One soloist guitar player that really could not carry a tune. This was the poorest entertainment I've experienced on over 30+ Cruises. The highlight of the cruise was the dining room dinners. Really very good food for a dining room venue, especially the beef entrees. A very pleasant surprise. We did our own tours in the ports as we had visited all of them before. On a scale of 1-5 overall I would give this cruise a 3. Not bad but not great either.

I have cruised often on Carnival and Norwegian. Once I cruised on Royal Caribbean. Princess was by far not as good. They did not allow us to plan a birthday meal together as a group of 16 before we cruised. They advised us that we had to do it once on the ship. However, it was a big hassle once on the trip and we ended up having to be at two tables instead of one even though they did have a place where we could have all sat together. The evening dining took too long and we missed some shows because of it. The food was just mediocre. The help was not overly friendly. We did like one bartender and our steward was great. I will probably never cruise with Princess again,

Overall Pleasant Cruise

The cruise was very nice, leaving from Seattle and returning to Seattle 7 days later stopping at 4 additional ports in Alaska along the way. The older I get, the less I enjoy standing in lines or cramped spaced, so we opted for a Club Class Mini-Suite that included a full bathroom and sitting area with combo Tub/shower. Club Class also included priority embarkation, and we had our own dining room separate from the masses... it was anytime dining, so we could go when we wanted during set meal time ranges, and be seated right away. The wait staff were excellent and enjoyable to get to know. We did take advantage a being able to bring some of our own wine on the ship which we drank at a special dinner at their Steak House, which was top of the line. The entertainment was plentiful, bars, theaters, art shows and plenty of shopping on-board. All in all I would recommend it to others who have Alaska on their bucket list as we did.

We had never been on a cruise before so we didnt know what to expect. Our first experience was them forcing everyone to go to the safety meeting. we weren't real thrilled with that and thought OMG what are we in for a week of them forcing us to do things? But once we figured out what was going on and how it all worked we were great. The food was great, the staff was always friendly and helpful, Our room was checked on twice a day to make sure it was tidy, I loved the fact that you could just go and get a snack (pizza, burgers, nachos, etc whenever), and there were always activities going on so you would not get bored. The one thing that was not our cup of tea was the Curtis Stone restaurant we paid extra for. Maybe it just wasn't our style of food but we could have skipped that and just gone to one of the regular places i think.

This was our 9th sail with Princess and our first on the Ruby.  Our hope is that the changes we noticed on this ship are taking hold fleet wide.  Ruby had the best crew we've experienced in terms of pleasantness, helpfulness, and welcomeness (if that's a word).  And we thought the food quality had improved significantly over previous experiences.  We're not 100% Princess travelers and so we feel we have a good basis for comparison and Ruby raised the Princess bar a peg but there are still a few pegs to go, for example, to match Celebrity's current offerings.  All the same, well done Ruby and keep pushing the service to your clients envelope.  It appears to be well received.

We found this Ruby Princess experience to be the easiest, organized and easy to follow boarding process we have had on any of our trips so far. What a wonderful start to our vacation! Getting off the boat was very easy as well. We had made our own arrangements to be picked up so we needed to change our assigned disembarking time, but that was simple and pleasant to do. Lots of friendly staff willing to help direct you to the right places. We really appreciate the effort that went into making this process as painless as possible. The ship was lovely and the entertainment on board was wonderful. I was especially amazed at the beautiful costuming, lighting, singing and clever choreography presented by very energetic dancers and singers. The food was fine and I was pleased that there were reasonable portions. We would definitely cruise on this ship again. As a matter of fact, all of us on that trip put down a deposit to make another trip next year.

As I said above, I liked the ship, the service and the itinerary. I have only two complaints. The vegetarian food is , as always, dreadful. These chefs have no conception of what constitutes a nutritious and tasty vegetarian meal. Our other complaint is that the excursions that are listed as easy do not take account of the difficulty of joining the tour. The ships are enormous and may be 4 to a dock making the walk to the pier or place of transportation far too long for anyone with walking difficulties- and that is a lot of people on cruises. Only one port had a shuttle that anyone knew about and told one about.

Staff were also afraid to speak to passengers about not washing their hands and filling water bottles at water stations even though there was a notice saying not too.Because of this many passengers were quite sick with upper respiratory infections which lasted more then a month. For long trips infection control should be Strictly adhered to and staff not be afraid to speak up to those passengers who refuse to comply.Princess management should back up their staff in these situations for the health of all. Sailing on the Ruby Princess

We have sailed on Princess eight times and found the Ruby Princess similar to the Crown Princess. The food and service we felt were better than usual. Our only complaint was the emphasis on shopping. We do no cruise to shop and found the constant pushing of the shopping rather cheapened the experience. We bought future cruise credits only because we sometimes take our grandchildren. As far as we are concerned if the "hawking" of sales does not tone down, we will stay with Celebrity and Holland America.

We thought there were several improvements on the Ruby that we really liked. One of the best was the pool design. We liked having the movies under the stars at the pool that used to be the "covered pool". There was always plenty of deck chairs. We also liked that there 3 showtimes for the "main" evening show. We preferred the 6:30 show time, which is less crowded than the 8:00 show time. We then could make it to the dining room at 7:30 just as the early dining folks were leaving the dining room. We never had a problem getting a seat at the show, and we never waited more than 15 minutes for anytime dining.

The attendant cleaned it well every time, so I think it was a permanent odor. The food was plentiful, as all cruises are.. I love the variety, but there was just something missing from the taste. We heard several comments from passengers that the pizza and burgers had been the best food they ate. And, my sister got sick, and I went to the front desk to ask for some meds(we were in port) and had to report it to the medic. We had to exit the ship the next day before everyone else(which was fine). They didn't set up transfer to the airport, OR anyone to help us with luggage. much more to the story. We really enjoyed our cruise to Alaska's Inner Passage on Ruby Princess. This was our second time cruising to Alaska with Princess. We think Princess Cruise Line does a great job with their shore excursions and on-board cultural lectures. The ship was clean and well-maintained, and our mini-suite was very nice. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful for the most part. The folks at the passenger info desk onboard could be a little more friendly, but they have a tough job to do. We can't speak to the entertainment or specialty restaurants, as we didn't use them! We ate from the buffet mostly. The food was plentiful and decent, but we think it would be good to offer regional food on the buffet (salmon or other fish, especially). We were a little disappointed in the International Café, as the desserts were mostly the same as you could get at the buffet. We had assumed they would be fancier. We would have paid extra for that! We did like the specialty coffees very much.

The only two areas I would rate Princess higher based on our experience is the onbaording experience & the room steward. Wow the onboarding in Seattle was the fastest I have ever had & the Steward addressed the room the moment we left it. As to the areas that were sub par - we had traditional dining & 2 of the nights we waited 15 minutes at the table to be helped. We also had the drink package & the bartenders were never around. They didn't even know the drink of the day & had to constantly look it up. We would finish a drink, but no one asked us if we wanted another. We traveled with our teen children & they never even asked for what they would like to drink.Just no personal attention. Charged for things we didn't buy. Limited shows with minimal seating. The Ruby Princess was the first cruise we have ever taken. The ship was laid out very well. I was afraid I would feel "cramped" on a cruise ship. We definitely got our steps in on our vacation. The food was exceptional, the entertainment was great. The excursions we took were a blast. We still like our ski trips, but will take a cruise again for sure. We are sold on the Princess line.

This particular trip, to the Mexican Riviera was smooth sailing on ice. Even though two out of the three stops were overcast and one was downright pouring the sailing was extremely smooth. The entertainment was very good and the entertainment stuff pulls all the stops out to give you a great time. The food ran the gamut from OK to good to very good. What else can you expect when you’re cooking for so many people and give so many different choices? All in all a great time was had by all.

We always enjoy cruising and there were some things that we had noticed that were different - crew not as friendly, usually all crew greeted us and this time was not the case, muster did not include our actual life jackets, our room was smaller than on other comparable cruise lines. We did enjoy our serving staff - Allen, Edwin and head waiter Jelena. Our grandkids thoroughly enjoyed all of the kids programs and gave our kids a break. Our tours in PV and Cabo were excellent, Mazatlan not so much.

Ruby Princess

In the past my wife and I have been on quite a few Princess cruises. The Ruby Princess was not the best Princess ship we have been on. The food was just OK. Breakfast & Lunch at the Horizon Court, Dinner in the Da Vinci Dining Room. The ship over-nighted at Cabo San Lucas, arriving around 1:00 pm, departing the following day at noon. My wife stayed on the ship.not going ashore. Tenders were required. I was in line for over an hour before I was able to take a Tender. Even though there were numerous Tenders from the ship and from the port ferrying folks, the system was not efficient. This system should be reviewed and upgraded to reduce the time required to get from the ship to the shore. My wife likes to play the slot machines in the evening. The Casino had a small number of 25 cent machines many of which were not in service and many 1 cent machines. She was unhappy because of this fact. She doesn't want to play $1 machines or one cent machines which are a waste of time.

Mostly good. The only real problem was the "any time" dining, which wasn't that at all. We finally, after two days, worked out a workable solution, but it is less than perfect. The crew was helpful, friendly, and supportive. The ship was beautiful, well maintained, and the smoothest sailing I've ever been on, and I'm been on many. Food was very good. Library too small, and the room to show indoor movies too small, making viewing impossible for many. Outdoor movies, at night, in a cool climate, uh uh. Not good. Shows were mostly good. The production shows were outstanding and creative.

I had a very relaxing experience on board the Ruby Princess, enjoying the great dinners and daily sunshine on the top decks of the ship. The staff on the ship were great and helpful. I was disappointed that the saunas were not operating a couple days as I had paid for the spa package when I got onboard. The massages were rejuvenating although I get much better massages at home and they're less expensive.

Mexican Riviera on Ruby Princess

Our first cruise was on a small ship, 750 passengers. We were nervous booking a cruise with 3000 other passengers but Princess did a good job of designing the ship so that I never felt crowded. It felt like a smaller ship. The ship experience was wonderful. The Mexican Riviera towns mostly felt like being at home in Los Angeles though. The exception was Mazatlan which is brimming with life and activity. All in all Princess did an excellent job of making our second cruise experience one to remember. We'd like to go again.

Classic Princess Ship

By: Kaz

Reviewed on: 08 May 2018

Ruby is a classic Princess ship and meets that standard. Although the ship was at capacity it didn't feel too crowded. This is not a young persons cruise line and it squarely aimed at the older market. The food was a little bland for my taste and as usual not a huge amount of choice if you wanted to be healthy. Overall like anything, you get what you pay for and I wasn't disappointed. The ports on the 10 cruise to Mexico were better than the 7 day and I would recommend that to anyone else considering cruising the Baja coast.

My thoughts

The ship, crew, rooms, service, scenery, excursions, were what we expected! Alaska is AMAZING! We had a blast. My only let down was however a big one! The food was not what we expected to eat! I paid extra for a couple nicer dining experiences that were great! But the Buffett experience was a big let down! While cruising through Alaska I expected local seafood like Crab or Shrimp, or Lobster! Nope! Salmon? Not this cruise. I did get a $20 Salmon wrap in Juneau off the boat and some tasty Halibut tacos in Skagway, but on the ship I was told to expect more than I could handle as far as shellfish was concerned. Would have been perfect if we were fed the basic foods of the region!

Alaska was incredible. The kids club was super. The Ruby is fairly dated - frequently common area restrooms were closed and often one of 2 pools and several hot tubs would be closed for repair. Service overall was mediocre. The cabin attendant very friendly while the bartenders and the waitstaff in the general dining areas did not seem customer service oriented, but rather annoyed. Getting on/off ship at ports was easy and fast.

However, all in all - This was my second cruise with Princess and I would definitely choose again!

The title above fits equally well to both Princess Cruises and the Ruby Princess. I expected to be surrounded by Love Boat cast at any moment. That was the feel of the ship. I was surprised by an unbelievable amount of real estate devoted to photos and photographers and their wares. The whole business plan seemed very wrong. That said, the Hotel crew was outstanding; very, very customer oriented and well trained. We mostly had poor weather, but the day at Glacier Bay was phenomenal. Our third time there, and we have always had beautiful weather.
