Have sailed on many cruises and do enjoy the freestyle of Norwegian. My only issue is the fact that I felt on this particular cruise the dining room code of dress was not adhered to in many cases - felt that the dress of some passengers was a little too casual in the main dining room.

Best entertainment on a cruise

By: Joan and Don

Reviewed on: 03 Oct 2014

We thought the entertainment was wonderful and as good as any we have seen on a cruise. This was our 7th cruise, first on NCL. We even had a surprise on our last night. One of our favorite Irish bands from Upstate New York came on board for a 50th Anniversary and before they got off in NYC they entertained anyone interested for over an hour and a half. The Cynthia MacLeod Trio was great and performed every night in the lounge. Enjoyed Jeff Haam's humor and the quality of the dance team was absolutely perfect and even more so as they contended with some very rough seas at times.

Rough travel! They allowed smoking!! Food seemed to cater to oriental taste! Entertainment not as good as other lines provide. Sailing from New York, is something we did not care for and will not book a cruise from that destination again!

We really enjoyed our time on the Gem. Our last cruise was on the Breakaway which we didn't enjoy (too many people). We felt extremely welcome by all the crew on the Gem and even had a server take care of us who had waited on us on previous cruises.

Extremely Surprised

Wonderful. Not only is it a beautiful ship, but the layout is great. ] We were a little disappointed in the food (some of it was flavorless), but the 24 hr. restaurant, O'Sheehan's, was delicious. It's basically bar food, but really good. The coffee was great on the Gem - it has not been good on HAL, RCL and, even, Oceania. The $$ restaurant, LeBistro, was excellent. I happen to be a Latitudes platinum member, and we had a free meal there, with a bottle of wine, as well. The crew was superior. I would go on the Gem again in a heartbeat. And, we were very apprehensive about going on NCL again. We mainly went on the cruise to surprise the internet manager - who we had cruised with prior - and was super happy that we went on that ship.

The Gem is a gem

This is the third time on the Gem we enjoyed the outside grill area on the back of the ship for breakfast and for afternoon snack time. The bartenders at the martini bar were outstanding We also enjoyed the specialty restaurants very much. We were however disappointed in the dinner menus this time in the complimentary dining rooms.!! We enjoyed our trip and hope to sail again soon

Impeccably clean ship, second year in a row made this my vacation and once again did not disappoint. Staff goes out of their way to make sure you are happy, comfortable and satisfied. Specialty dining is superb. Our suite was perfect sixe for family and the staff kept it fresh and stocked at all times. Freestyle Cruising as ONLY way to go. Drink package is an absolute. Great Reggae band in afternoon by pool bar but they always left too early. Only issues I can mention: on second trip this year, the buffet was sub par as far as choices, and seemed to copy itself daily with only a few stations offering their "theme" dinner for that night. Very crowded at peak times, almost free for all-ish. Smoking allowed in Casino and Bali Hai deck bar was not friendly to non smokers as they both reeked of stale cigarette smoke. If you want to get a deck chair at the pools, you need to leave your towel on chairs very early to "reserve" your seats or you will not get a spot.

We have been on the Gem before and we were disappointed with the level of service and shows. Our biggest frustration was when we arrived at their private island; the ship had passengers stand in line to get tender tickets with tendering to begin at 11:00 am. My wife stood in that line to get 9 tickets on tender #3. Our family then went to breakfast in the buffet and they called our tender at 9:30. They had to know they were going to arrive at the island early, but they never said anything while 2000+ passengers stood in line for the tickets. We will congratulate our room steward Paul Simon who did a tremendous job keeping our cabins clean and keeping our grandchildren happy with his towel animal creations. One of our granddaughter's broke her toe while onboard and Paul sent her a fruit plate to make sure she was okay. I will also mention that the photo studio was also easier to deal with than on other cruise lines we've been on.

My experience on the Norwegian Gem Cruise

Reviewed on: 22 Jul 2017

From the moment I and my party of three boarded to the de-embarking at the end of the cruise I was treated by all the personnel in a very courteous, but relaxed manner. Our Steward who looked after our cabin went over and above to ensure our needs were met in a very timely fashion. We all enjoyed the buffet for morning breakfast and lunches with the huge array of foods available. I was surprised that they even had skim milk in cartons. The other dining rooms where we had dinner were excellent. Notably the portions were adequate rather than overwhelming. One left the table feeling satisfied. For quiet time, the library or the promenade deck filled that need. We tended to visit the pools earlier in the morning as after 10 a.m. they were crowded and noisy with the music blasting. We also enjoyed the many stage shows that were worthy of any we would have seen in Toronto. We would not hesitate to recommended the NCL

Loved the Gem

We had an exceptional vacation on board the Gem. The ship is beautiful, the staff is wonderful and our cabin was perfect for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens- mini suite mid-ship). We had a great time at Kennedy Space Center, relaxed in the water at Great Stirrup Cay and shopped in Nassau. Getting up early to reserve chairs at the pool is a must, but we spent the entire day there on sea days. The food in the restaurants , buffet and dining rooms was always yummy. The shows were fantastic, offering something for everyone. We are looking forward to our next Norwegian cruise!

Very disappointed with accomodations

By: Carol

Reviewed on: 08 Oct 2017

We were on the Norwegian Dawn a few years ago, and spent a lot less money for a Haven room. We had 1 1/2 baths, his and her closets and a separate dining room. On the GEm we were on the 15th floor and it appeared as though these rooms were added on “after the fact”. There was cramped closet space, no separate dining area and it just looked smaller. For 3 nights we heard the fog horn every 2 minutes while we tried to sleep. It sounded like we were 10-20 feet from it, but I know it was farther. We ended up having to nap during the day because we were up all night. This definitely impacted our stay and I would tell anyone who asked not to waste their money on that room. We have been on several Norwegian cruises and have never complained about anything. I’m not the kind to go on social media and say unkind things and if someone hadn’t sent me a survey, it would have never been noted.

Wheelchair Nightmare

By: Diane

Reviewed on: 16 Feb 2018

This was not our first trip on the NCL Gem - and once again - boarding in need of a wheelchair - was a very sour start to a trip. We waited almost 3 hours from your dictated arrival time while the same THREE wheelchairs - we got to know the attendants' faces - made their way to the ship and back again. Finally - when there were no longer any passengers waiting in the fenced in arrival lines - other ship's crew came with the additional wheelchairs for the waiting wheelchair passengers - crew who dumped us and our belongings in the Atrium because they were "not cleared" to bring us to our cabin. Having traveled on other lines, we know that this is not the norm. NCL needs to do better.

Loved our suite, Ruby suite, loved our Butler and room steward. Very clean cabin Very helpful Butler and housekeeping staff Lousy restaurant service Mediocre food even in speciality restaurants Lots of drinking Very casual Bad photographers...never saw them Until they set up in lobby other than when they were standing by hand planks at ports. Beautiful ports but Portland is tooooo long Would cruise later if enjoying the pool on sea days is your thing All in all loved our room, ships ok, entertainment pretty bad. Ship did not seem to run many people not knowing how to do their job. English is NOT the first language of most so it can get flustering trying to get stuff done. Would sail on the Gem but probably not from NYC.

NCL Gem Review

By: Kim

Reviewed on: 20 Aug 2018

I was not impressed with the Gem, its staff or its food. We had 2 rooms and were travelling with another family that had 2 suits . Total of 9, 4 adults and 5 17 year old teenagers. The ship had minimal entertainment for the kids other than the entourage lounge which was very small. The daytime entertainment was extremely limited unless you wanted to pay and play deal or no deal and/or Bingo every single day. The movies were held in the lounge area on the main deck w/the coffee bar and guest services so it was not pleasurable at all. The dining staff was rude at times and the food was sub par at best. The buffet at times had better food. The cabin attendant in my room was very attentive but my husbands room was horrible. There was not one night that they gave an animal towel and that room was used for the kids. We addressed many concerns to the staff/relations desk and NOTHING was done. We still never received an animal towel for the kids room. These are just a few issues! Never again!!

Gem is small but great restaurants

By: FamOf5

Reviewed on: 24 Aug 2018

As a family of 5 with 3 kids under 6, the Gem was small on options for kid stuff although the people in charge of the kid programs were excellent and the rest of the ship staff were very good with some very personal staff that did make our trip worth it. The pools were quite small. For a family with kids, I’d go with the larger ships which have more options for kids and bigger pools. We had a 2 bedroom Haven.

Overall good. Negatives: Buffet closes at 9:30 p.m. Would be nice to get something after the 9 p.m. show. Outdoor dining outside of buffet many seats missing cushions. Those that had cushions were stained, dirty. Many staff seemed tired, disinterested. Golf "cage" had no equipment entire cruise. Cagney's service very slow, food not special. Atrium large screen used mainly for NCL advertising. Positives: Main dining dinner excellent, service prompt. Good shows in theater, good live music in bar areas every night. Never felt crowded thruout the ship. La Cuccina's, Le Bistro both excellent.
