Inaugural Cruise of the Muse

By: Kim

Reviewed on: 24 Apr 2017

The Muse is a beautiful ship. We loved our time cruising. The ports of call were well chosen. Our excursion with virtuoso in Port Mahon was one of the best we have taken. The staff was wonderful in every way! Our only complaint with the ship is the new restaurant styles. We didn't like having to make reservations before our cruise. Having never been on the ship this was really a guess. Many times we were waitlisted and not sure where we would be eating. Also we live a scheduled life so on a cruise we like to live moment to moment concerning dinner and the reservation time. Most nights we were hurrying to meet our friends for cocktails so we could make our dinner reservations. Also we were not a fan of the Indochine, the Asian inspired restaurant. We tried to be open minded and try the different ones. But Atlantide was our favorite and eat there several times. Also if we spend this amount of money we are not interested in paying a fee for a restaurant.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The service was first rate and the amenities were generally excellent as well. Most excursions were very good, although there was need to change our itinerary twice due to external circumstances. Consequently there were several times when plans were unfortunately altered or cancelled. One item which was just less than stellar was that the food was in general good not great. In their defense it is a new ship and we can see clearly that this is an area they will most likely tweak as they receive reviews. This should in now way hinder the choice for this ship it was a great experience

Disappointing Overall

By: Beachgirl

Reviewed on: 15 Jul 2017

First time on Silversea and excited about the new ship, the Muse. It still has that 'new ship' smell...*ahhh*...but unfortunately so do the staff and services. Even beyond just working the bugs out, there are some basic design flaws that need to be revisited by SS. Positives: room size, ship-to-crowd ratio, size of vessel (allowing it into smaller ports). Food was mostly good, not great. Staff was generally friendly and helpful. Public spaces were beautiful and well-appointed. Negatives: Dress code and dining setup. No main dining room - you must make dinner reservations in one of 8 restaurants; if you fail to do so pre-cruise, you may be eating room service a lot. Also be prepared to dress up a bit to leave your room after 6pm - not what we wanted after days in 90+ degrees. Vibe was too stuffy and structured for us. Not a great vacation experience. And we now get the 'Silver' in Silversea. Demo pretty old. Ship was mostly a ghost town after 9pm. Yawn.

Mixed Reactions to the Muse

By: Michael from Annapolis

Reviewed on: 04 Oct 2017

First of all, we can say that the staff of Silversea continues to provide what we think is the best service on the high seas. So good to see old friends from previous cruises, crew and passengers alike while making new acquaintances from around the world. Having spent more than 100 days in total on the Silver Spirit, our reaction to the Muse was decidedly mixed. The ship is pretty as you would expect, but some of the modifications from the Spirit were unwelcome as far as we were concerned. We prefer the Veranda Suites on the Spirit. They eliminated all the little shelves on the cabin walls. My wife missed the vanity at the end of the bed. And when will they start offering "shower only" suites? The reservation requirement for all restaurants on the Muse is a mess. We understand they are rethinking that terrible idea. We liked the addition of the bars on Deck 4 and the wide open reception area on Deck 5. The Art's Café is a nice addition, but the Panorama is now less used.

We have been sailing with Silversea since the late 90's and been on all their ships. The Silver Muse is definitely a step above the other ships in the size of the suites and public areas as well as the dining options. Typically we stay in a Silver Suite and on the Silver Muse we had all the space and creature comforts we could desire. We also liked the ship's subdued decor. The entertainment and onboard activities are typical Silversea; subdued. Two changes need to be made to improve the ship. First, when we sailed dinner reservations were required for every restaurant. Although we had made reservations, some other guests had not and it was difficult for them to find a place to dine when they wished. Further this policy precluded you from meeting someone in the bar and deciding at the last minute to have dinner together. We understand this policy has been changed recently. Secondly, the menus at each of the restaurants never changed. The need to offer more variety.

Plenty of storage, nice bathroom, walk in closet, fantastic bed which included our selection of pillows. Our fridge was constantly replenished. The butler even brought me a cold ice pack for a leg injury I had before boarding. The meals were all restaurant quality food. We especially liked the Italian fare and eating lunch at alantide. Must say we didn’t have a bad meal including the pizza on deck 10. We are in our early 50s and were younger on the boat. We made great friends, enjoyed the daily trivia and eating dinner with shipmates. The workout facilities were fine and never crowded. The ship was clean and new. This was not our first silversea cruise and will not be our last. I had read some reviews that weren’t glowing about the ship but we had zero complaints.

We were a bit wary of the larger size (around 600 passengers) of this ship versus other Silver Sea ships we have used, but there were no lapses in service and the embarkation/disembarkation process was not appreciably more difficult. On the plus side, larger passenger capacity resulted in a better range of entertainment and larger/nicer public spaces. We would definitely book another cruise on the Silver Muse.

All our expectations as the quality of the ship were met. What differs for us and a previous cruise was the need to pre-arrange reservations for several of the restaurants. Prior to going on this cruise we thought we had made reservations for the La Terazza restaurant. Upon arrival we discovered that our reservation had not been received. We did attempt to make reservations through our butler, but by the time we were on board it became very difficult due to demand to make any reservations. The gym was great. More choices for restaurants, some good, some not so good. The main restaurant, Atlantide, easy to get in to and excellent. Could not get into their premier restaurant, La Dame. The other three specialty restaurants were disappointing (Kaisecki, Indochine, and a jazz restaurant). The main disappointment was the quality of wines included in the fare....much better on Seabourn. Really not a good selection, and they could obtain much better wines for the same price, so they need to improve their wine program. Supplemental charge wines were much better, for an extra price. As for the itinerary, our first two stops were Ibiza and Menorca, both throw aways. The rest of the southern mediteranean itinerary was great.

Rooms were fantastic, larger than anything we had been on before plus a real bathroom. You never felt crowded no matter where you went, including the sail days. We have been on cruises with standing room only in the pool so this was a pleasant surprise. Food was excellent. On board entertainment was average. It is a comfortable amount of people, mostly of a similar age group, making it amenable to striking up conversations . My criticisms are of the entertainment - which is minimal and not of the highest caliber. The food is good -- but not great. The main dining room is lovely with excellent service... but the menu never changes. For those of us that prefer dining in that room, a change would be nice. We booked the last silver suite cabin which was 933, under the Grill kitchen, after being reassured that the noise problem from having a kitchen above your cabin had been resolved. It most certainly has not and the SS staff are well ware of it and suggest that the ships’ designers should come aboard and spend time in these expensive cabins to try them for themselves. Our only saving grace was that the weather was very cold and there were not so many passengers eating outside. The staff did assist us with limiting the hours for cleaning to before 10.30pm, but there was no compensation, not even a bottle of wine. Very poor. Also the wine quality is greatly reduced from our last cruise. In fact the only wine we could tolerate was an Alexander Merlot, which we found in a supermarket for USD14. Is that really the best SS can do? Surely there many boutique wines available that were much much better than that. If the doesn’t improve we may take a serious look at Seaborn.

Time on ship was good -- felt at times the waitstaff in the main dining room were not well trained to handle busy times especially at breakfast. Things seemed to get lost in translation at time. Did not think the crew was friendly when we disembarked the ship at the different ports and then when returning to the ship. Example: "have a nice day" and upon your return "welcome back" or "welcome home" I must say a competitive cruise line we travel on too does an excellent job at this.

Silversea’s provided excellent service at all levels. The facilities were beautiful but perhaps a bit bland in design. The food was good. Alantide was excellent but not super creative( I hate choosing my own sauce!) . La dame was good but not worth the hype. They should consider making it a tasting menu with wine pairings to set it apart from the other restaurants.

We loved our time on the Silver Muse. Being relatively new to the cruising holiday, we were unsure of what to expect knowing that it was a smaller boat and the seas might be a bit rough. Our minds were put at ease the moment we stepped on the boat. It was very efficiently run. Our butler and maid were top notch and were highly adept at dealing with sea sickness. Our room was spotless which even included happy anniversary balloons and a cake. They were always there with smiles on their faces. We tried all the restaurants and all had an abundance of choice and excellence. We enjoyed the lectures and took part in many of the different activities on board - from trivia to bingo to dance to the dance and singing shows. There were days where there was no spare time due to all the activities. The onshore excursions were well planned and we did something different in every port. We would highly recommend both the boat and the trip to anyone that is planning something like this.

This was an amazing first Silver Seas adventure. For first timers it was wonderful to experience all of the little details that made up this wonderful voyage. Everything from the personal butler to the servers who would carry your plate for you from the buffet, everyone was there to make you feel special. We loved the singers and the lectures. A special highlight was taking dancing lessons in the afternoon. It was so much fun. The food in the restaurants was wonderful. I require Gluten Free and everyone made sure that my meals were delicious and there were lots of desserts. The alcohol flowed freely and the in room bar service was with full sized bottles of your favourite beverage. I can’t wait to sail with SilverSeas again

This is our second cruise with silver city. We enjoy being on a smaller ship instead of the really large ships with several thousand passengers. The service seems more intimate and they are very attentive. They actually get to know your preferences after just a couple of days and the food and presentation was truly wonderful. If you are looking for a ship with lots of things to entertain you, like waterslides at the pool, big time entertainment shows, then this is not the ship for you, in my opinion. To me, it is more like traveling in a luxury hotel with amazing service, pampering and food that takes you to amazing destinations. The ship is never crowded which is such a pleasant difference from the huge ships.... Lots of quiet spaces to relax In.

Great - But has lost a little luster

Reviewed on: 27 Feb 2020

We sailed on The Silver Muse on a 17 day cruise last month and also sailed on the Muse last year. The ship is very lovely, beautifully appointed and comfortable. The cabin is excellent, well maintained and very comfortable. I feel the food, which is still good, has slipped somewhat from last year. On a long cruise, it would be nice to change the menu - every night the same meal in each of the restaurants gets boring. Even when you change it up and visit the different restaurants on the ship - each of their menus remains the same. Lovely staff... just not quite the same level as last years. Had I not sailed on this ship last year, I probably would not have noticed. Most notably in the dining room, the dining maitre'd's lacked the panache of last years crew. This being said, we loved the ship and will definitely book again soon,
