The Stonewall Inn’s Storied History <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n
The Stonewall Inn and a surrounding 7.7-acre zone that includes the triangular Christopher Park across the street became the country’s first LGBTQ+-related national park site when President Barack Obama designated it a national monument in 2016. <\/span>After The Stonewall Inn went out of business following the uprising, the spaces formerly occupied by the nightclub housed various outlets over the decades, including a bagel shop and a Chinese restaurant<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
When the lease for the building recently became available, Diana Rodriguez, founder of the nonprofit social-advocacy group Pride Live, along with Ann Marie Gothard, the co-founder of Pride Live’s annual Stonewall Day, felt a calling to make the center a reality. “With big projects like this, there’s usually a lot of red flags,” Rodriguez says. “But all we saw were green lights.”<\/span><\/p>\n
Pride Live funded the project, working with founding partners such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Google, and pop star Christina Aguilera. The organization will operate the space with the National Park Service’s rangers.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Inside, visitors can gather for tours of the monument and notice<\/span> subtle design elements that nod to the space’s past, such as an inlaid metal line that snakes across the terrazzo floor, tracing where The Stonewall Inn’s original bar once stood, and a vintage geometric pattern in the ceiling that recalls the original tin panels that covered the nightclub. During demolition, crews discovered and preserved the original brick passageway that once connected inn spaces that were separated decades ago. (The other half of the original nightclub still operates independently as a bar called Stonewall Inn<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n
Another hallmark in the visitor center will be a fully restored 1967 Rowe AMI jukebox, the same model as the one famously depicted in an image of battered debris in the aftermath of the rebellion. <\/span>Visitors can ask for special tokens to play music on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

When he entered the dark room that once housed a portion of <\/span>The Stonewall Inn<\/span> for the first time in more than five decades, “I got chills,” Mark Segal says. He remembered the dance floor as the vibrant spot where he loved to safely cut loose when he moved to <\/span>New York City<\/span><\/a> as an 18-year-old in 1969. <\/span>For him and many others, Stonewall was a haven where gay men, lesbians, and transgender people could congregate.<\/span><\/p>\n
The activist and journalist is back in Greenwich Village at the new <\/span>Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center<\/span><\/a>, set to open June 28 to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The 1969 rebellion against violent police attacks – stemming from <\/span>multiple raids over illegal alcohol sales and crossdressing –<\/span> became an important turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. The new Visitor Center – which supports the Stonewall National Monument, the first in the National Park Service dedicated to LGBTQ+ culture – will serve as a hub for tours, performances, and talks about LGBTQ+ history and the ongoing fight for equality.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>","articleImage2Caption":"

“You're going to learn about a lot of people who did little things, like me,” says Segal, who spread the word about the days-long uprising through leafleting and declarations written in chalk on sidewalks and buildings. “[The uprising] took place over many hours and blocks. Many people did a lot of things – there are a lot of names to recognize.”<\/span><\/p>\n
Segal, who <\/span>founded the <\/span>Philadelphia Gay News<\/span><\/i><\/a> and wrote the book <\/span>And Then I Danced: Traveling the Road to LGBT Equality<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>is helping curate the visitor center’s permanent collection, a series of exhibits dedicated to the neighborhood and what the legacy of Stonewall continues to mean around the world. “Stonewall has been mythologized so much over the years,” Segal says. “My hope is that people will really learn the truth when they come here.” The free-to-enter venue will also feature an intimate theater and revolving art exhibitions with work from Parsons School of Design students and LGBTQ+ artists such as <\/span>Fewocious<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>","heroImage1Caption":"
