Silves is known for its red castle on the top of the hill that shows the strategic importance of the town in the defense of the Algarve. The nearby cathedral still holds the tales of the Portuguese soldiers that bravely died in the conquest of the town allowing the King to be called - King of Portugal and of the Algarve. Later in the morning, you will visit the village of Monchique. This town was once the Spa of King John II (15th century) that believed that these waters had healing properties and nowadays the surprisingly lush town offers some of the most interesting local handicrafts of the Algarve. Before your return, you will still have the chance to visit the highest point of the Algarve - Foia - enjoying beautiful views of the surrounding areas.
