Calcio Fiorentino was an early form of football that originated in the 16th century in Italy. The Piazza Santa Croce of Florence is the cradle of this sport that became known as giuoco del calcio fiorentino (Florentino kick game) or simply calcio (kick). The sports that use spherical bodies of varying sizes is ancient and widespread in virtually every ancient culture.

This logic is similar to that of the Greeks who practiced a game called Sferomachia, of which we know is that adopted by the Romans took the name of Harpastum.
