Classic Polar Bear Adventure (7 days)

Day 2

Winnipeg / Churchill, Canada

Day 6

Churchill—Dog Sledding / Winnipeg, Canada

Day 1
Winnipeg, MB Canada
Hotel Fort Garry Dinner

Our Churchill polar bear tour begins in Winnipeg. Once a center of fur trade and a Canadian Pacific Railway boomtown, today Manitoba's capital is a cultural and commercial center at the eastern edge of Canada’s vast prairies. Transfer to the historic Fort Garry Hotel, grande dame of Winnipeg hospitality and one of the city’s most prestigious landmarks. Meet your Expedition Leader at a welcome dinner this evening.

Day 2
Winnipeg / Churchill, MB Canada
Churchill Hotels Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Fly by chartered plane to Churchill this morning. This hospitable frontier town, originally a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post, is our base for adventure. On the 6-day trip we head to the tundra this evening for our first glimpse of the bears, though we often see them from the bus as we leave the airport, even before boarding our Polar Rover. Our 7-day trip opens with an evening presentation on polar bears and the northern environment by our professional naturalist staff.

Day 3
Churchill, MB Canada
Churchill Hotels Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Custom-built Polar Rovers are our mobile means for spending time among the bears. Though they can accommodate up to 35 passengers, we take a maximum of 16, ensuring everyone a window seat and plenty of space. Our Expedition Leaders know the best places to observe polar bears, which congregate each fall in the region as they wait for Hudson Bay to freeze, signaling the start of the winter seal-hunting season. As we watch them interact, we're delighted by their antics and rugged beauty. From the warmth of our big vehicle, we may see mothers with cubs, young males play-fighting, or a lone bear ambling over the tundra in solitary majesty. Our Expedition Leader interprets all we observe, explaining the bears’ behavior and how they thrive in such a harsh environment. In the evenings, we meet for dinner and presentations on wildlife and local cultures.

Day 4
Churchill, MB Canada

Day 5
Churchill, MB Canada
Churchill Hotels Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

On the 7-day trip, we tour historic Churchill, then head out to the tundra for evening bear viewing and dinner aboard the Rover. During the day we may explore the coast road on a drive to Cape Merry, often spying Arctic fox and Arctic hare. Keep a close eye out for them, as their winter-white coats offer excellent camouflage later in the season when the ground is white. If the skies are clear, our nighttime tundra excursion might reveal one of nature’s most exhilarating experiences—a chance to view the northern lights away from the glare of town. Though never predictable or promised, the auroral display often starts as a pale glow in the northern sky, then the lights begin to flicker and dance in shimmering curtains of color, most typically green but occasionally red or violet. On the 6-day trip (your nighttime tundra journey takes place on Day 2), there’s free time in Churchill or an opportunity for an optional helicopter excursion over the vast expanse of frozen tundra before boarding the flight back to Winnipeg.

Day 6
Churchill—Dog Sledding / Winnipeg, MB Canada
Fort Garry Hotel Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Our return flight to Winnipeg is scheduled to depart mid- to late afternoon, offering as much time as possible for exploring Churchill today. A highlight this morning is an authentic dog sled ride. We meet a local musher and his team, spending time with the lively and affectionate dogs before taking turns riding behind them on an exhilarating trot through the boreal forest. If time permits, you may be able to pick up last-minute locally made handicrafts or take an optional helicopter tour over the tundra before we depart. We'll have a farewell lunch together before flying back to Winnipeg, where a final reception concludes our adventure together.

Day 7
Winnipeg, MB Canada
None Breakfast

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for flights home.

Please note: On the 6-day trip, our sled dog excursion takes place on Day 5 with a return to Winnipeg that afternoon, and flights home scheduled for Day 6. On the 7-day trip, the nighttime tundra trip occasionally alternates between Day 4 and Day 5. Itineraries may vary slightly, but inclusions are the same.

The World’s Most Coveted Small-Group Polar Bear Expedition

When you're standing on the outdoor platform of our Polar Rover, the chill Arctic air feels invigorating. But even more thrilling is the sight of a huge polar bear. Sometimes they are silhouetted against the horizon, slowly moving shadows on the vast expanse of tundra. On other occasions, one may wander right up alongside us. Safely elevated above him, you’re nonetheless just feet away as you peer down at his shaggy, cream-colored bulk. Noticing us, he stops, sniffs and turns his face our way, curious. Awed, we draw in our breath, surrounded by the silence of the tundra. The big bear ambles, then halts again. He rises on his haunches to peer at us more deliberately. We grin like kids, filled with delight. We watch. We wonder. Minutes go by, perhaps an hour, who knows? Out here among the bears, time stands still. Join us in Churchill for one of nature's most wondrous wildlife encounters!

Look for Wild Polar Bears

On our flagship polar bear trip, meet the world’s greatest concentration of these Arctic carnivores as they wait for Hudson Bay to freeze and seal hunting season to begin

Custom Tundra Vehicles

With huge windows and see-though steel mesh flooring on the outdoor observation platform, our custom Polar Rovers get you safely close to view polar bears in their wild habitat

We had a wonderful trip to Belize with NatHab.  We stayed in gorgeous places and had the best guide anyone could hope to have. We would definitely go with NatHab again.  Everyone in our group of 10 had been on many trips with them.  This was our first, but definitely not our last.

Incredible Trip & Organization

Both hotels we stayed in were great. I have some allergy restrictions and all of the food provided was outstanding and they took such great care of me. My expedition leader was fantastic. He was so passionate about his job, he was friendly and funny and always went out of his way to make sure everyone was happy and safe. The most important part, the trip itself, was everything I wanted it to be. Even though it was much warmer than it was suppose to be, between the 3 days on the rover, we saw 35 bears. We even saw 3 different kinds of fox and some snowy owls. It was quite the magical experience, especially for a Floridian. The lectures after each day were also very nice. The trip was organized and fun and I'd recommend it to everyone.

We were very pleased with Natural Habitat Adventures ( Nat Hab). We were met at the airport in Johannesburg. From that time on we were always met and ushered through each country's system. Our accommodations met or exceeded our expectations. The meals were very good. Our expedition leader Francis was very knowledgeable about both birds and animals. He could track wild life from the vehicle while driving along, and then go off road to find it. He was friendly and helpful. Our tour coordinator Olivia was wonderful. Her cheerfulness, helpfulness and kindness were greatly enjoyed. We saw lots of animals including everything we expected to see. It was great trip.

went on Town and Tundra adventure to see polar bears. cold came in early and all polar bears left before we got there so we wound up seeing 2 arctic hares and a red fox (which we have by our house). Wind chill was -50 each day. No heat in sleeping rooms in Tundra lodge, just some heat in the hallways. Have to go outside in -50 wind chill to get to lounge car and/or dining room, and to bathroom if you are in lounge car or dining. Only one of the 4 days did they use 2 rover vehicles where there were only 16 in each as advertised so everyone could have a window---maybe because there was nothing to see anyway. The night before we got a phone call from Nat Hab saying if we cancelled we would get a 50% credit on another trip. In retrospect we should have cancelled and eaten the other 50%. Not even a lecture on polar bears.Pre trip day in Winnipeg was excellent.. Charter plane flight better than expected.

Africa Safaris Fall 2018

Natural Habitat did an excellent job of organizing one month of African Safaris for us. Working with one operator proved to be the correct way to go and everything worked seamlessly. We travelled through 7 countries which translates to lots of connections and planning. The private conservancies were definitely the way to go to get the up close encounters with the animals. The conservancies use of local guides and giving back to the development of the local communities was great to see. The remote mobile Asilia Camps were well run and some of our favourites.

Natural Habitat Adventures, Whale Shark Tour

By: Dave

This tour included unforgettable close encounters with whale sharks and (unplanned) manta rays. In addition, NHA provided opportunities for me to witness many other forms of wildlife as well as unique geologic features. For someone who’s interested in natural history, this tour exceeded my expectations. I felt very fortunate that Fernando, one of the tour leaders, happened to be a birder. While only two in the group (including me) shared this interest, Fernando made a special effort to take me aside and point out a great many bird species, most of which I’d never seen. His expertise and consideration added greatly to my overall experience.

Escape the Real World and see the Polar Bears!

By: Nancy

Reviewed on: 14 Nov 2019

My husband and I loved the NHA tour to Churchill to view the Polar Bears. Given that it was affiliated with WWF, we felt they had the best interest in preserving the sanctity of the polar bears' environment and knew just what to do to allow us to observe the animals yet not interfere. We loved taking a one week trip that felt so relaxing b/c we decided to completely unplug. Since we were so remote, in such a different environment, and because wifi and cell service is spotty, we completely disconnected. Best thing we ever did on a vacation. We will do that more often now, but it's natural up on the edge of the Arctic!
