Hike to the legendary Dochula Pass, an incredible Bhutanese mountain pass, that towers at 3 140 metres above sea level. Dochula Pass presents exceptional views of the snow-capped Himalayan Mountain range along its long road, linking the city of Thimpu and Punakha. Head to the Druk Wangyal Chortens, adjacent to the country’s first Royal Botanical Park, where 108 memorial stupas and chortens stand in honour of Bhutanese soldiers slain in the war against rebels from India. The Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, sanctioned the shrine in 2003 after King Jigme Singye Wangchuck overcame the insurgents. Additionally, there lies a monastery, Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, built in reverence of the King. Next head off along a rugged elevation, through thick woodlands of broad hemlock trees, with pyramid like crowns and blush and tweed hued fissured trunks, which lead to an open meadow, en route to Lungchutse temple with a path lined with a row of waving prayer flags. At the foot of the temple rests a rich bamboo underbrush and dense needle-like juniper shrubs in the backdrop of panoramic views of the aerial Himalayan Mountains, including Gangkhar Puensum, the premier peak in Bhutan, at 7 497 metres and the premier unclimbed peak in the world.
