The old city is settled within the remnants of a sturdy defensive wall and spread out towards the West of the famous Red Fort which was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1638 - 1648 A.D
The planning of Delhi started in 1911 under the guidance of Sir Edwin Lutyens, this was following the declaration made by King George V at the Delhi Durbar, that the capital of India was being shifted from Calcutta to Delhi. This was an emphatic way to reinforce the permanence of the British Empire in India. The new city was inaugurated on 09th February, 1931.
Delhi is steeped in history, which dates back to 3000 years. 'Indraprastha', the seat of the Pandavas in the early centuries of the era, was situated in Purana Quila and is believed to be Delhi's earliest city.
