Doka Coffee, Poas Volcano & La Paz Waterfalls Tour

Meet your guide in the lobby to start your full day experience with three distinct activities. You will traverse the city of Alajuela, passing the Agriculture Monument, as well as the Monument to Juan Santamaria named after a folk hero and the famous

Mango’s Park; favorite among visitors. As you ascend towards the Poás Volcano, you may notice a pleasant drop in temperature and changes in vegetation and crops. You’ll see coffee plantations as well as fern, flower and strawberry farms along the way, creating an array of colors and textures. On the way to the volcano you will visit the Doka Coffee Estate for a real coffee farm experience as well as breakfast. You partake on a coffee tour in an actual coffee plantation where you will learn the ancient techniques used by the experts to produce some of the best coffee in Costa Rica. The careful process involved in the cultivation, harvesting and roasting of the Golden Bean will then be illustrated, very hands-on, and then you may savor the delectable end product.

After the coffee tour you will continue to the Poás Volcano where you will have the chance to see the main crater with its sulfur fumaroles and learn about the different ecosystems in this national park. Right after the visit to the volcano, you will continue to La Paz Waterfall Garden for lunch and a tour of the various nature attractions. As you arrive to La Paz, you will walk through a trail leading to a waterfall in the middle of the rainforest. Inside the park you will also visit the hummingbird gallery, the serpentarium, the bird house, the butterfly garden and the frog’s exhibit. You’ll return to the hotel after this visit

Day 3
Arenal, Costa Rica
Arenal Manoa Breakfast, Dinner

Private transfer to the Arenal (3 hours).

Arenal Hanging Bridges Canopy Walkway

This project consists of eight fixed bridges, ranging in length between 8 and 22 meters and six hanging bridges, built with the latest techniques and designed with an eye for both beauty and safety. The hanging bridges are between 48 and 98 meters long. All the bridges are made of galvanized steel and high-strength aluminum. The safety mesh and the suspension cables are all galvanized steel. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact. The trails, covering a distance of about 3.1 km, are right inside the forest. As you walk, you can observe a significant diversity of plants and wildlife that are typical of the rain forest as well as some views of the Volcano (weather permitting)

Evening Visit to Ecotermales Hot Spring

After signing in at the reception, you will be given a key for your locker where you can change and store your belongings. There are two separate dressing rooms one for men and one for ladies where there are restrooms, showers, sinks, mirrors and wooden benches. You will also be given a plastic bag for your wet swimsuit when you’re done.

A path through the forest leads you to the natural thermal hot springs with 6 free-flowing pools set in a natural river gorge. Water temperature ranges from 100ºF to 109ºF depending on the pool. The high temperatures and mineral rich waters require that you spend no more than 10 minutes in the higher temperature pools and alternate an equal amount of time between hot and cold water. You have access to a cooler water pool and cold water showers so that you can cool off as needed. The time limit in the hot water pools is especially important to keep in mind when you are traveling with children.

Day 4
Arenal, Costa Rica
Arenal Manoa Breakfast, Lunch

Hike Rio Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park

You will leave La Fortuna at around 7:30 a.m. and drive 1 ½ hours to the Tenorio Volcano National Park, to begin the 7 km hike (approximately 4 hours) through the tropical rain forest. Arrive at “Los Teñíderos” of the Rio Celeste, the site where two streams of water come together and form the light blue color that gives the river its name.

Further along the hike, you will see the Rio Celeste waterfall. The final reward for the journey is a typical Costa Rican lunch served at the end of your experience in the rainforest.

Day 5
Monte Verde, Costa Rica
Monteverde Lodge & Gardens Breakfast

Board a land vehicle and then a boat across the Arenal Lake to Monteverde. Transfer to the pier at Lake Arenal Dam (25-35 minutes) to board your boat to the other side of the lake approximately 30-40 minutes depending on wind conditions). Total time from Arenal to Monteverde is approximately 3 hours.

The boat will dock at Rio Chiquito a small town on the shore of Lake Arenal, where you will board a 4 wheel drive vehicle for a 2 hour ground transfer to the Monteverde area. Total transfer time from Arenal to Monteverde area via Lake Arenal is approximately 3 hours.

Curi Cancha Hike with Naturalist Guide

Curi-Cancha Reserve protects 96 hectares or 237 acres of forest. Approximately 50% of the reserve is covered in fully recovered forest, 45% consists of secondary forest and the remaining 5% is open areas. At Curi-Cancha, you will have the opportunity to see Cloud Forest, and a Transitional Pre-Montane Wet Forest, the diversity in types of forest creates diversity in wildlife. Curi-Cancha has a bird list of over 200 species including the Resplendant Quetzal, the Three-Wattled Bellbird, Toucans, Black Guans and many others. It is also possible to see the White-Faced Capuchin, Howler and Spider Monkeys. While a bit more difficult to see, we know that the Tyra, Collared Peccary, Two and Three Toed Sloth and the Armadillo are also permanent residents. Curi-Cancha offers a natural history hike of no less than three hours. The reserve has a total of 6 kilometers (a little over 3 miles) of trails with easy access. Curi-Cancha’s policy is to never have more than 40 guests in the reserve at the same time. The reasons for this are twofold, first to protect the forest and secondly to insure a high quality experience for guests.

Day 6
Monte Verde, Costa Rica

The slow-paced Sky Tram gondolas soar through the cloud forest, offering endless views during their ascent. The Sky Tram ends in a wide observatory located at 6000 feet which is also part of the continental divide in Costa Rica You will be able to observe the Nicoya gulf, the mountain range and the cloud forest. Once in the top you will commence the second leg of your experience. The Sky Trek will let you travel along 1.7 miles of cables slung between towering trees. You will go down on a faster trip by riding down on a zip line stretching across canyons and between treetops. Ultimately, you will return to the starting point at the main building. Once at the visitor’s center, you will continue on our Sky Walk experience. This way, your naturalist guide will be able to explain and interpret several aspects of the cloud forest flora and fauna. Poas Volcano is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. When the mist and clouds part you’ll see the sulfuric, bubbling, green rain fed lake at the bottom, surrounded by smoke and steam rising from fumaroles. Water from the lake is constantly seeping through cracks in the hot rock, evaporating and building pockets of steam.

Arenal Volcano, with its almost perfectly shaped cone, soars 1,633 meters (5.500 ft) above sea level. This volcano presents five craters altogether, and one of those craters is about 150 m ( 500 ft) deep. From time to time, deep earth echoes are heard and clouds of vapor or smoke billows out of the top. The frequency of activity varies greatly from day-to-day. This area also shows the largest fresh water lake in the country. Arenal Lake is a man-made water reservoir favorite among water sports lovers and fishermen. Although the main attraction in this region is the volcano, the area offers a variety of activities including boat tours on the lake, stand up paddling, a canopy walkway, zip lines, hot springs, horseback riding, canyoning, sustainable farming and biking just to name a few.

Monteverde is a peaceful community made up of dairy farmers, naturalists and tourism service providers who have joined together to create a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment that is becoming known throughout the world. Founded in 1954 by a group of Quakers searching for a peaceful place to live, it is the home of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Children's Eternal Rain Forest, and the Santa Elena Reserve.

Excellent accomodation and tours

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.
