The women of Konavle made their living in a tumultuous border region, where flashing gold or silver was an invite for thieves. Hence, they decorated the areas where you’d typically find jewelry – the neckline and wrists - with silk embroidery. Apart from adding a touch of beauty to the traditional costume, more importantly, these designs communicated the woman’s social status to the rest of the world, thus preventing potentially uncomfortable social encounters. In a region always surrounded by armies or bandits, peace was an everyday focus. You will visit a traditional Konavle house, today an art studio of the academic painter Antonija Ruskovic, known for working tirelessly to preserve this tradition in the face of globalization. Over some herbal tea and local sweets, learn about the region’s history and the making of silk at home, just like every Konavle woman did over centuries.
This intimate insight into the Konavle traditions might just be one the most special treats in this region. Nothing you have seen so far, like the mass production in China or other countries, can substitute for this very personal, inspiring experience in a private home amid Konavle valley.
