Your sightseeing tour will begin with a stroll through the medieval old town with its narrow stone alleys and stairways worn from use over the centuries. You will be uplifted by the town’s squares surrounded by small and colorful houses. As early as in the 7th century, Rovinj was surrounded by city walls that were subsequently strengthened by towers. The city had seven gates, three of which have been preserved to this day: The Gate of St. Benedict, The Portica and The Gate of the Holy Cross. It is easy to get yourself lost in Rovinj because of the many streets labyrinth, but have no fear because everything is just a ten minute walk away from the main square. You will also pass through the most famous street in town – the Grisia Street. At the top of this dense maze, stands the church of St. Euphemia, the patron saint of the city. The church was built after a miraculous event, when in 800 the sarcophagus containing the body of the christian martyr Euphemia was brought into the city. The construction lasted 26 years and the large copper statue of St. Euphemia, was fixed so that it turns on its bearings around its axis by the strength of the wind.
