The Travel + Leisure World's Best Safari (13 days)

Day 1
En Route
N/a None
We set off today for Cape Town. It won't take us long to realize why this city is amongst the most beloved in the world-its striking natural features and cosmopolitan wiles make it a remarkable gateway to our adventure.
Day 2
Cape Town, South Africa
One&only Cape Town None
A Micato Safaris representative will meet you on arrival in Cape Town, South Africa and take you to the One&Only Cape Town, where a room has been reserved for you. Perhaps the most picturesque city in all of Africa, Cape Town presides over a coastline of stunning grandeur, mountains rising above the seashore, and romantic, outlying vineyards whose proprietors have been practicing the art of winemaking since the 18th century. Cape Town is home to the best of everything - museums, restaurants, hotels, and natural beauty. Your home in Cape Town will be One&Only Cape Town, one of the city's most exciting new hotels, located on Cape Town's bustling Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
Day 3
Cape Town, South Africa
One&only Cape Town Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Wake up to a leisurely breakfast at your hotel, enjoying the waterfront view and settling into your new surroundings, before heading off to explore the magnificent Cape Peninsula on a full-day tour. During the tour you will visit the legendary Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point (of Flying Dutchman fame), Simon's Town, and the resident colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach. Cape Point marks the southern extremity of the Cape Peninsula, affording visitors views that are unrivalled anywhere else in the world. The reserve has a variety of wildlife including baboons, grysbok, rhebok and the hard-to-spot eland. Come evening, Micato guests are welcomed into the fold at the home of a prominent Cape Town couple for drinks and dinner, where you will hear a talk on local lore and "insider" Cape Town spots.
Day 4
Cape Town, South Africa
One&only Cape Town Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Prepare yourself for some of the most beautiful - and bountiful - countryside anywhere in the world as you depart for a day of wine tasting, estate touring, and a gourmet lunch through the Cape Winelands. You will also tour the charming village of Stellenbosch with its Cape Dutch, Georgian, and Victorian architecture. In Franschhoek, walk around the town and explore the shops. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in France in 1685, when Protestantism was outlawed, hundreds of so-called Huguenots fled their homeland, arriving by ship at the Cape of Good Hope. Many of them were given land by the Dutch government in a valley called Oliphantshoek (Elephant Corner). Soon after they settled here, it became known as Franschhoek (French Corner).
Day 5
Cape Town, South Africa
One&only Cape Town Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today you will depart for Khayelitsha township. In addition to gaining insight into local life here, we have an opportunity to see-and contribute to-the powerful work being done at Rosie's Soup Kitchen. Rosie has been running the Kitchen for 19 years from a one-room shack. With the help of her volunteer team, she feeds hundreds of people on a daily basis-people who might not otherwise get a meal. We embark on a tour that we hope will shed some light on the evolution of modern South Africa. The "Walk to Freedom" tour which you will take today visits sites of great significance to this growing nation, with its history of struggle and promise.
Day 6
Singita Kruger National Park, South Africa
Singita Sweni Lodge Or Singita Lebombo Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning, board your flight to Kruger National Park, via Johannesburg. Located in the Kruger National Park's southeast region, the Lebombo concession is one of the most pristine wild territories in Africa. This area is renowned for the big five, abundant antelope and birdlife and an incredible diversity of smaller animals. Rangers attest to the fact that this region boasts a greater density of wildlife than anywhere else on the continent, which you will witness with two game drives per day during your stay here. In terms of scenic beauty and diversity, the Lebombo region is no doubt one of the most exceptional regions of the Kruger National Park.
Day 7
Singita Kruger National Park, South Africa
Singita Sweni Lodge Or Singita Lebombo Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Your accommodation at Singita is Sweni Lodge or Lebombo Lodge, two of the most elegant and luxurious lodges in the Kruger National Park. One cannot heap enough praise on Singita - the game viewing, the rangers' knowledge, and the service are all fantastic, and yet it is the lodges' inspired design that renders guests speechless.
Day 8
Singita Sabi Sand
Singita Sweni Lodge Or Singita Lebombo Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Singita Kruger's two lodges were built to reflect its "touch the earth lightly" philosophy, which is entwined with every aspect of the lodges' daily life. It is one of the reason these lodges are so respected and honoured - the other major reasons being their beauty and unobtrusive luxuriousness.
Day 9
Singita Sabi Sand
Singita Sweni Lodge Or Singita Lebombo Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Bush breakfasts and sunset cocktails may be arranged for you in some of the most scenic spots in the reserve, or you may dine in the privacy of your deck. This may just be the most romantic spot in the world.
Day 10
Victoria Falls, Zambia
Royal Livingstone Hotel Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today you fly to Livingstone, Zambia. On arrival, you will be met and driven to the Royal Livingstone Hotel, which stretches luxuriously along the banks of the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world. The hotel consists of a series of colonial-style buildings, with deep verandas, set amidst indigenous trees and plants. A classic swimming pool visually links the waters of the river with the terraces of the hotel. Here you can wash off the dust of the bush, and enjoy air-conditioned, modern luxury. In the late afternoon you will imagine you are on the African Queen, as your "Sundowner" cruise drifts lazily along the Zambezi River, and you sip wine and watch for crocodiles, hippos, and perhaps even an elephant, as you float past.
Day 11
Victoria Falls, Zambia
Royal Livingstone Hotel Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning, walk the length of Victoria Falls, an awe-inspiring experience. A permanent mist from the spray of the constantly crashing waters has created a micro-climate all its own, and a rain forest grows above the chasm and the river. You will also enjoy a scenic flight over the Falls with breathtaking views. The wide basalt cliff, over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a wide placid river to a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges. Facing the Falls is another sheer wall of basalt, rising to the same height and capped by mist-soaked rain forest. Enjoy some free time before tonight's dinner.
Day 12
Johannesburg, South Africa
N/a None
Today you will fly to Johannesburg to connect with your international flight, arriving home the next day. As you leave the belly of Mother Africa, you will understand why there are so many "World's Bests" in this humbling arena of wilderness and urban sophistication, this awesome juxtaposition of European sensibilities and tribal heritage, this growing nation that you call South Africa.

We're fans of Travel+Leisure's annual Best in the World polls. (Admittedly, we're just a bit prejudiced, having been voted World's Best Safari Outfitter by T+L a record nine times.) So a few years ago we decided to honour Travel+Leisure and its readers by creating an all-star safari that sets down at some of Africa's best hotels, as consistently recognized by the magazine.

We chose carefully to find the best African Tour company that we believed would provide the best, stand behind its product and not offer lame excuses. Micato proved its excellence in every way, including acknowledging an error and standing behind its well earned reputation to make it right. Not all would do that, as we all know from experience. M did a remarkable job and worth the money.. Best personnel and logistics around. So.......the best, and proud to tell the world.

Micto has a reputation for extraordinary service which is well deserved. We chose the Grand Safari and secretly thought that it really wouldn't fully justify the name or the price but were pleasantly proved wrong. We were greeted by Jane and Felix Pinto, company founders at the start and end of the trip who made us feel a part of their family. Every effort was made to make the experience comfortable, luxurious and magical and all of our needs were anticipated. They even showed up with a birthday gift for me when I had forgotten all about the date! The guides are charming and knowledgable about animals, history, culture, politics - you name it. The drivers were magicians at anticipating animal behavior and getting us to just the right spot to see just the right animals. We've since met other Micto travelers whom we were pleased to note have had similar experiences. Don't go to Africa with anyone but Micato.

Everything from the moment we were picked up in Capetown, to the end of our trip in Nairobi was top rate. The guides and drivers were exceptional, the hotels were fabulous. We really felt spoiled by the way we were treated. The only downside had to do with sending our bags home that we weren't going to use on the 18 day safari - one of the five bags never made it out of South Africa. DHL has no idea what happened to it.

We recently completed our Micato Safari. We spent 13 days in Kenya and Tanzania. In short, the trip was perfect. Starting with our Nairobi Airport greeting by Micato (Salma). She raced us through customs where we were picked up in a Micato Land Cruiser and delivered to our hotel where we were met by Micato Concierge Virginia. She seamlessly checked us into our Nairobi hotel. Then we met Phillip, our Safari Guide. Phillip was top notch and made sure we had a fantastic time including a delicious lunch at the home of the Pintos (founders and owners of Micato). there is an incredible amount of detail that goes into the planning and execution of a African Safari. Phillip made it look easy (although we know he was working hard to make our experience perfect). If we decide to go back to Africa (or visit India), there is only one Safari company we'd use and that's Micato.

This company is absolutely outstanding. They thought or and took care of every detail. Once we landed in Kenya they took over with a team of advisors, guides and helpers. Tour was well planned and the so-called camp sites (really hotel-like) were top of the line. The people that work for Micato are incredibly nice, friendly and helpful. The tours guides are very knowledgeable. All speak excellent English. One detail to remember is that you travel with other people and they can enhance or be a negative. We were lucky we had a good group, but I could see how it would be a downer to travel with other types of people.
