Our attention captured by Oslo’s modern skyline, we check in to Grand Hotel Oslo. Rest today or perhaps take a leisurely stroll through the city, before retiring to our hotel for dinner.

Oslo awaits, and this morning we explore the Royal Palace and the Oslo Opera House. Take this afternoon at leisure. Tonight, gather with your fellow guests at a special location for a Welcome Dinner.

Touching down in Tromsø, we head for the Polaria, the world’s most northerly aquarium, and learn about some of the creatures we hope to later glimpse in the wild. This evening, we are guests at a Midnight Sun concert at the distinctive Arctic Cathedral.

Climbing aboard a cable car, we glide to a nearby summit for a bird’s-eye view of Tromsø and its surrounds. Afterwards, we embark Silver Cloud, in preparation for our Arctic voyage. This evening a Welcome Dinner and reception are held on board.

Having cruised overnight, we set out on Zodiacs to arrive at isolated Bear Island, which is set almost half way between Tromsø and Svalbard. Protected as a nature reserve, its cliffs are frequented by many varieties of seabirds, including Brünnich’s guillemots, northern fulmars, and Atlantic puffins.

Svalbard’s Southern Region is less obstructed by ice than the rest of Svalbard, due to the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream. Setting foot on dry land, we come across several abandoned mining huts, as well as some active commercial and scientific settlements.

Iceland’s longest fjord, the 60-km long Eyjafjörður, runs alongside the town of Akureyri. As we set out on foot to explore, we find it hard not to be captivated by the green hills and wooden houses that dot the landscape of this delightful town.

Today, we cruise by the majestic Hornbjard Cliffs; the dramatic curve of their sharp peaks a sight to behold. While small in size, Vigur Island offers us the chance to see Atlantic puffins, Arctic terns and black guillemots all gracefully making their take-offs and landings from this green oasis. Iceland’s only windmill, dating back to 1840, can also be found here.
