Monte Verde, Costa Rica

Arrive at Liberia’s Daniel Oduber International Airport. After passing through Immigrations and clearing customs, when you are exiting the building, look for a representative with a sign with your name on it. He or she will take you to your Spanish speaking driver & your bilingual guide to depart to your hotel in Monteverde for the approximately 3.5 - 4 hour driving time.

Monteverde

Monteverde is a peaceful community made up of dairy farmers, naturalists and tourism service providers who have joined together to create a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment that is becoming known throughout the world. Founded in 1954 by a group of Quakers searching for a peaceful place to live, it is the home of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Children's Eternal Rain Forest, and the Santa Elena Reserve.
Day 2
Monte Verde, Costa Rica
Monteverde Lodge & Gardens Breakfast

Monteverde Reserve with Naturalist Guide

Drive 20 minutes to the entrance of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve accompanied by a local Naturalist Guide. Originally just 4,000 acres, the Monteverde Reserve now includes a protected area of approximately 25,000 acres, comprising six different life zones. So many habitats in such a small area, along with extensive trail improvements, allow visitors to enjoy a rich diversity of flora and fauna with relatively short distance and easy walking. The Reserve was founded in 1972 and extends down both slopes of the Tilarán Mountains (elevation 2,300 to 5,600 ft.). It encompasses six different ecological life zones and is home to more than 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds and 1,500 species of plants. From January to July, you have possibilities to observe the Resplendent Quetzal at the reserve.

Monteverde Sky Adventure Park Zip Line

Take a zip line ride through the cloud forest canopy. Sky Trek will let you travel along 1.7 miles of cables slung between towering trees. To get to the zip line, you'll ride the Sky Tram (included in the Sky Trek experience), which offers extensive views of Monteverde hills and Nicoya gulf. The variable climate and altitude has helped produce high biodiversity. Monteverde is home to more than 400 species of birds as well as thousands of insect species and plants. As you reach the top of the mountain by the aerial tram gondolas, we will be able to observe the cloud forest natural environs. There are possibilities to spot some of the local avifauna and occasionally observe mammals such as the white-throated capuchin monkeys or the howlers.

Day 3
Monte Verde, Costa Rica
Monteverde Lodge & Gardens Breakfast

Day at leisure to relax or take any additional tour offered in the area.

Day 4
Arenal, Costa Rica
Nayara Hotel, Spa & Garden & Nayara Springs Breakfast

Lake Crossing Monteverde to Arenal

Meet your transportation and drive to the bank of Lake Arenal. The drive from the hotels in Monteverde takes approximately 2.5 hours, depending on the location of your hotel.

The road from the Town of Monteverde to “Rio Chiquito” is a very bumpy gravel road. Once at the lake, you will have to walk on the sand to board the boat (wear shoes that can get wet). Lake Arenal is a manmade lake originally planned as Costa Rica’s main reservoir for the generation of electricity. During the lake crossing is possible to observe different species of birds such as Little Blue herons, egrets, Osprey and Olivaceous cormorants. When you arrive at the dock known as “El Tapon” on the other side of Lake

Arenal, you will have to walk up a steep cement ramp to reach the van and driver that will be waiting for you. Drive 25-35 minutes to your hotel.

Arenal Hanging Bridges Canopy Walkway

This project consists of eight fixed bridges, ranging in length between 8 and 22 meters, and six hanging bridges, built with the latest techniques and designed with an eye for both beauty and safety. The hanging bridges are between 48 and 98 meters long. All the bridges are made of galvanized steel and high-strength aluminum. The safety mesh and the suspension cables are all galvanized steel. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact. The trails, covering a distance of about 3.1 km, are right inside the forest. As you walk, you can appreciate a great diversity of flowers and wildlife that are typical of the rain forest as well as some imposing views of the Volcano (weather permitting).

Day 5
Arenal, Costa Rica
Nayara Hotel, Spa & Garden & Nayara Springs Breakfast, Dinner

Guided Visit to La Fortuna Waterfall

The length of the tour is approximately 3.5 hours. From La Fortuna you will drive approximately 4 miles southeast. You will travel through the Costa Rican country side along the way with cattle farms and agriculture and good chances to see some birds such as oropéndolas and toucans. From the waterfalls site parking, you have to walk five hundred meters (1600 feet) on a steep but safe trail into the forest in order to get to the waterfall (70 meters or 220 feet high). At the base of the waterfall there is a natural pool where you can swim in the fresh water of La Fortuna River for about one hour. Later on, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Evening Visit to Ecotermales Hot Spring

After signing in at the reception, you will be given a key for your locker where you can change and store your belongings. There are two separate dressing rooms one for men and one for ladies where there are restrooms, showers, sinks, mirrors and wooden benches. You will also be given a plastic bag for your wet swimsuit when you’re done.

A path through the forest leads you to the natural thermal hot springs with 6 free-flowing pools set in a natural river gorge. Water temperature ranges from 100ºF (38ºC) to 109ºF (43ºC) depending on the pool. The high temperatures and mineral rich waters require that you spend no more than 10 minutes in the higher temperature pools and alternate an equal amount of time between hot and cold water. You have access to a cooler water pool and cold water showers so that you can cool off as needed. The time limit in the hot water pools is especially important to keep in mind when you are traveling with children.

Day 6
Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Hotel Capitán Suizo Breakfast

Today meet your Spanish speaking driver and depart by minivan for the 4 - 4.5 hour drive to Tamarindo Beach Town.

Tamarindo beach is located north of the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast in Guanacaste province. It is part of a bay formed by a cape, Cabo Velas. Playa Grande lies to the north of Tamarindo inside the bay. The two beaches are separated by a natural salt water estuary. South of Tamarindo Bay there is another estuary and beach, Playa Langosta.

Both Playa Grande and Playa Langosta are protected nesting areas for the giant leatherback turtle, and are part of the Costa Rican national park system. These beaches are major nesting areas worldwide for the turtles, which arrive from October to March to lay their eggs.

Tamarindo is an ideal place to relax, walk, for horseback riding, sport-fishing, scuba and diving tours, as well as visiting the mangrove swamp and observing nesting sea turtles. Warm water surfing is possible year. This area offers opportunities for surfers of all skill levels. Fishing opportunities include Marlin, sailfish, and giant tuna among other species. Dolphins, manta rays, and the nearby coral reef make this a good spot for snorkeling, as well as some of the best spots to enjoy Costa Rica scuba diving.

Day 7
Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Hotel Capitán Suizo Breakfast

Kayaking & Snorkeling at Capitan Island

As you row through the blue smooth waters of Tamarindo beach towards the white sand Capitán Island, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful colors of the water, and observe underwater coral reef, and exotic fish.

Important to note: Upper body strength and good physical condition is recommended to enjoy this activity. It is not available for children 10 and under. Everyone has to sign our waiver of responsibility (parents or guardian must sign for those under 18).

Excellent accomodation and tours

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.
