The resort is spread over 12 richly landscaped acres and is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest.

Day 3

La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Caño Island Snorkeling Excursion

Caño Island Biological Marine Reserve is 12 nautical miles offshore from Drake Bay. The attraction is not necessarily found on its land, but underwater. The waters surrounding the island are some of the clearest in the country. The Island's dark, volcanic rock is home to numerous species including smaller brightly colored tropical fish, and the larger snapper, tuna, grouper, mackerel, jack, white tip shark, sea turtles, barracuda (typically in schools), manta rays, eels, porcupine fish, sea urchins, octopus, lobster, sponges and sea cucumbers. There are 15 or more types of stony coral species as well as the attendant coral eaters (starfish, mollusks, and hermit crabs). Visibility is good-to-excellent year round. The island is of considerable geographical and archeological importance. This 300-hectare piece of land was a burial ground dating back to the pre-Columbian era of the Diquis tribal people.

Day 4
Drake Bay, Costa Rica
La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hike in Corcovado National Park – San Pedrillo Station

After breakfast leave with your local guide for a hike in Corcovado National Park. A 25 minute boat ride from the lodge will land you at the northern San Pedrillo entrance to the park. Early morning is the best time to spot wildlife and observe the many species of birds found in the park. Frequent sighting include monkeys, coatimundis, squirrels, spiders, macaws, bats, leaf cutter ants, and more. Learn from your guide about the life in the rainforest. The hike will follow a river and visit a waterfall. This will be your chance to cool off in one of the shaded pools of the river. Afterwards, continue down river until reaching the Park Station at San Pedrillo. Located just offshore is Picaros Island, a refuge for several species of marine birds including the Brown Boobie, Blue Heron and Brown Pelican. At the Station, under shade trees on the beach, you will have a picnic lunch including fresh fruit and cold drinks. Afterward there will be time to explore the beach or relax.

Day 5
Drake Bay, Costa Rica
La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The Bug Lady’s Night Hike

Want a great nightcap? Try nature's special blend: lots of spineless wonders, a splash of mammals, and a mellowing shot of jungle ambiance in a tall rainforest tumbler, and you've got the basic ingredients for a perfect ending to your delicious stay in Drake Bay. This two and a half hour night tour takes place after dinner (usually from 7:30 to 10) behind the Lodge in the primary forest along the Agujitas River. The Bug Lady, Tracy Stice, and her husband Gian are adept at finding the most incredible creatures in the dark. The natural history of these insects and reptiles is fascinating, especially with the human element of why we fear these harmless bugs.

Day 6
Drake Bay, Costa Rica
La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day Trip to Sirena Station

Meet your nature guide in the lobby and sail to Sirena Ranger Station. You'll share your boat with other guests from La Paloma, or from a different lodge. Sirena is the largest interior ranger station in Corcovado and it is also the most rustic and remote. Because of its history and location, Sirena biological Station in Corcovado National Park is a keystone for science, education and ecotourism in the region. Sirena is over a one hour boat ride in a skiff. The coast line is scenic beyond belief. Once you arrive at the beach near the Sirena ranger station, you will need water shoes or sandals to walk to shore as it is rocky. The beach landing can be wild so be quick, alert and listen to your guide. Each trekker will carry lunch and snacks. There will be cold drinks for the end of the hike. The trip is not recommended for the faint of heart. Avid naturalists will enjoy seeing this remote station in Corcovado National Park during the approximately 3 hour hike. The wildlife observation is definitely rewarding in this region, and it is possible to spot bird species like Trogons, Woodpeckers, Wrens, Guans, birds of prey, Herons, Egrets, Thrushes, Tanagers and Manakins among many more. Chances are good to observe mammals like monkeys, Tyras, Agoutis, Coatis and Peccaries. Also, the visitors can find arboreal Iguanas, Basilisks and lizard like the Nerops and Annolis.

Day 7
Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Transfer to the local airport.

Before boarding your flight, it is time to say good bye to your Naturalist Guide who will return to San José.

Board your 1 hour and 20-minute Costa Rica Expeditions light charter flight from Drake Bay to Tortuguero. You will be greeted at the airstrip and will cross the Tortuguero River by boat to Tortuga Lodge.

Day 8
Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Tortuguero National Park Wildlife Boat Tour

The morning hours are especially active in the rain forest, when the wildlife is hungry and in search of their energy source for the day. It’s not uncommon to find troops of Howler monkeys in search of tender young figs or the leaves of the Monkey Plum tree. You might even encounter a River Otter hunting. The Northern Jacana is often perched on an island of Water Hyacinth looking for insects and miniature shrimp and the caiman is quietly waiting for its next meal to swim by.

Boutique Turtle Expedition

On the Boutique Turtle expedition, which is exclusive to Tortuga Lodge you will walk on a secluded beach to observe sea turtle nesting. Only your Boutique Turtle Nesting Expedition Group will have a one hour boat ride to an isolated stretch of sand that you'll have virtually to yourselves.

You'll depart Tortuga Lodge at approximately 7:00 PM after a 6:00 PM dinner. Your guide will take you south on the 1 hour boat ride to a remote beach where you will disembark and begin to walk the beach. Your guide will first ask you to stand still and close your eyes for several minutes, when you open them again, your eyes will have gotten used to the darkness and you will be ready to begin your walk. That is very important because flashlights scare the turtles and are not allowed.

At least 25 years ago, she broke out of her egg, climbed up through the warm sand, and stumbled down to the ocean shore – through a gauntlet of predators on this very same beach. Perseverance was the first chapter of her life. She is the one in 10,000 who survived. Now she has returned to lay her eggs.

Once you or your guide spots her, you will stand a few feet from a 300 pound Green Sea Turtle while she lays 80-100 eggs, covers up her nest, perhaps digs a false nest to throw off predators, and, finally, after more than an hour, returns to the sea.

Day 9
Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The Words Adventure

For children in the developing world nothing beyond the Three R’s in their own language is as valuable for them to learn as English. Young adults with a working knowledge of English have vastly more opportunities than their mono to lingual peers. Yet in Tortuguero a town where at times there are more English speaking visitors than inhabitants, the vast majority of children grow to up without learning English.

If you would find it rewarding to spend an hour a during one or more of the days that you will be at Tortuga Lodge sharing your English knowledge and learning about the life of child from Tortuguero, please let us know by emailing your Travel Planner. We will schedule the sessions so that they do not interfere with the other tours and excursions that you have planned.

The lessons will take place in the town of San Francisco de Tortuguero. Transit time from the lodge by boat is five minutes. The Lodge will supply the transportation. There is no charge. Children as young as 10 are welcome to participate.

Along with the Word Adventure program, Costa Rica Expeditions and Tortuga Lodge are supporting several other educational programs in the area. One is the creation of a music program at the Tortuguero High School. One easy way to help this effort is by bringing along an old instrument.

If you have and are willing to donate a violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone, go ahead and put it in your suitcase. Upon your arrival in Costa Rica we will make sure the instrument arrives at the Lodge with you, without including it in the restricted amount of luggage for air and boat travel.

For more information on other programs and how you can help, visit this page: http://www.tortugalodge.com/how-can-i-help.php, speak with your travel planner or ask any member of the lodge staff.

Day 10
Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Twilight Walk in the Rainforest at Tortuga Lodge

Before beginning your Walk on the trails at Tortuga Lodge there are two things you need to know. First wear long sleeves and long pants and literally bathe in insect repellent! You’re going to need it, next put on your rubber boots (available in all sizes free of charge at the lodge).

The trail behind Tortuga Lodge is 1.4 miles or 2.2 kilometers long. Depending on what you are seeing along the way it can take anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours. Common sighting are the several species of frogs that might occur at night like the Smokey Jungle Frog and the Red Eyed Tree Frog, as well as snakes and other reptiles. Also, it is possible to observe some mammals like insectivorous bats and marsupials like the Common Opossum and Mouse Opossum. Additionally the night time hours offer a myriad of insect’s including the Peanut Headed Bug, Tailless Whip tailed Scorpion and a host of Katydids. Upon return to the lodge your guide will take you to the dock where you may be able to see the Fishing Bats hunting.

Day 11
San José, Costa Rica

Excellent accomodation and tours

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.
