DAY 1: South Africa Tour Begins as You Fly to Johannesburg

Welcome to South Africa! Get ready to experience one of the most culturally unique and visually inspiring places on earth. After passing through immigration and customs, you will exit the airport, where our driver will be waiting for you. Feel the warmth of the African sunshine as you head to your boutique eco-chic hotel in an upmarket suburb of Johannesburg. After spending the afternoon at your leisure, tonight’s welcome dinner will be at a quintessential South African restaurant where many of the traditional local dishes are cooked over a grand wood-fire grill.

DAY 2: Visit to Soweto Township & Cooking Class

This morning it’s time to get to know the people of South Africa with a visit to the Soweto Township. Known for its significance to the Apartheid resistance, Soweto is home to Nelson Mandela’s house as well as the Hector Pieterson Museum. It is also home to 1.3 million residents with proud African heritage. We will begin the morning with a visit to an award-winning restaurant that provides an authentic glimpse into the lives of Soweto locals. You will cook alongside local chefs followed by a delicious lunch. After lunch we will tour the sprawling township along the southwestern side of Johannesburg, visiting a number of rich historic sites along the way. The rest of the afternoon and evening is yours to relax or explore.

Day 3
Drakensberg Region, South Africa
Oaklands Country Manor Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3: Zulu Village Visit

Today we make our way to the breathtaking Drakensberg region, a World Heritage Site, where you’ll check into your serene manor hotel that boasts uninterrupted views of the mountain range. We will then journey to a nearby Zulu village where we’ll be warmly welcomed with home-crafted mahewu Zulu beer. Next you’ll meet the village’s traditional herbalist, Mama Rati, who looks forward to sharing her extensive knowledge of South African herbs and plants and how they can be used in traditional healing. We’ll end the visit at a local homestead where the ladies of the village will prepare a traditional Zulu meal for you to enjoy.

Upon return to the hotel you can spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the farm or just relaxing. Dinner is an inspired farm-to table meal served in the manor restaurant with stunning vistas all around you. The menu changes daily with locally-sourced ingredients that reflect the harmony of the land, people and community.

Day 4

DAY 4: Indian Cooking Class in Durban and Short Flight to Cape Town

This morning you will transfer the three hours to Durban, a coastal town that is also the largest Indian city outside of India. As a way to get to know the local culture, we’ll learn how to make Indian Curry, a South African staple. Our chef, Sandren, will show us the intricacies of authentic curry while illuminating another facet of South Africa’s myriad cultures. Following the cooking class and the delicious lunch you’ve just prepared, you will transfer to King Shaka International Airport for an easy 2-hour flight to Cape Town. Upon arrival in the cosmopolitan and picturesque city, you will check in to your luxurious boutique hotel. Tonight you may choose to enjoy an optional meal at a unique (and touristy, but fun!) African restaurant in the heart of Cape Town. Their 14-course Cape Malay and African menu will bring together flavors from across the continent for a truly African culinary experience.

DAY 5: Walking Food Tour of Cape Town and Cable Car Ride up Table Mountain

Today you will get the chance to sample a vast array of traditional Cape Town dishes during a walking food tour. Nibble on popular African soul foods and sip coffee produced in a micro artisan roastery as you stroll the streets with our knowledgeable guide. During the walk you’ll discover this region’s multicultural history, people, and architecture while getting your fill of delicious local snacks. After the tour, you will ride the cable car up Table Mountain, one of the most iconic features of South Africa’s topography. Rising over 3,500 feet above sea level, this massive plateau will provide you with truly unforgettable panoramas and a picturesque view of Cape Town from above. After taking the cable car back down to sea-level, the rest of the evening is free for you to enjoy.

DAY 6: Full Day Tour of Cape Point and Peninsula, Boat Rides, and Penguins

Today we have a full day tour of Cape Point and Peninsula, starting off with a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast. After arriving in Hout Bay, you’ll have the opportunity to take a short boat trip to see resident cape fur seals. After returning to land, we’ll travel to the Cape Point Nature Reserve where you will discover a wide array of local flora and fauna, including baboons, rhebok, Cape Mountain zebra, bontebok, and approximately 1,100 indigenous plant species. Continuing back along the coastline toward Cape Town, we’ll stop to visit a local penguin colony and quaint fishing village. Dinner tonight will be at your leisure, giving you a chance to savor your last night in Cape Town.

DAY 7: District Six Museum and African Cooking Class

This morning will be spent visiting the District Six museum, which depicts a long and difficult period of South Africa’s recent history. Next we’ll travel to the Langa township for a class at a small cooking school that provides underprivileged locals with vital culinary job skills. Your participation helps support this worthwhile organization while giving you the opportunity to cook traditional African food alongside locals in an authentic South African cooking school. During your visit, you will learn about African and Xhosa culture and cuisine, interact with residents, and–most importantly–contribute to a community initiative that is changing lives. After preparing and eating your delicious lunch, we will transfer to the Winelands and check into our upscale Provencial-style retreat surrounded by gorgeous mountain views. The rest of the evening is free for you to enjoy.

DAY 8: Exploring the Winelands and Cape Dutch Cooking Class

Today will begin with a scenic drive through the heart of the Cape Winelands, taking in jagged mountain ranges, expansive vineyards, and classic Cape Dutch homesteads. After arriving in the famous Stellenbosch wine region, you will enjoy your first wine tasting of the day set amongst giant oak trees and beautifully preserved colonial buildings. Lunch will be held in the Winelands followed by a short transfer to a resplendent Cape Dutch working farm situated on a 10,000 acre nature reserve. After a refreshing high tea, we will take an exciting drive through the grounds to view springbuck, black wildebeest, baboons, foxes, lynx, and more. Upon returning to the grand lodge, you’ll enjoy a cooking class and interactive workshop that combines traditional farm favorites with fresh, local ingredients. Together we’ll savor our delicious farewell dinner that we’ve prepared before returning to your Winelands retreat for the evening.

DAY 9: Depart for Optional Safari Extension or Fly Home

Our South African culinary tour ends today. Following breakfast, you’ll transfer to the Cape Town International airport and depart for home, or set off on one of our incredible optional safari extensions.
