You then continue to the second waterfall with its imposing 30 to meter (98 to foot) falls.

Day 3
San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica
Savegre Hotel Natural Reserve & Spa Breakfast, Lunch

Los Quetzales National Park

It is located in the “Cerro de la Muerte” area, South Central Region of Costa Rica. It was declared a national park in July of 2005. Los Quetzales National Park encompasses Los Santos Forest Reserve, stretching across 12,355 acres. In the area there are three types of rainforest, and fourteen different ecosystems. Los Quetzales is set at a high altitude between 2,000-3,000 meters along the Talamancan Mountain Range. Much of the park is covered in cloud forest and protects a crucial habitat for a number of plant and animal species. The Resplendent Quetzal is one of the most elusive and skittish birds, and it can be observed in the park. Other bird species residing within the park include Hummingbirds, Trogons, Tanagers and Guans. Mammals like Sloths, Coyotes and Pumas are also occasionally spotted through the park's limits.

Paraiso de Quetzales

An extension of 80 hectares (200 acres) contains a wealth of flora and fauna. More than 140 species - some of them endemic to the area- make this place a birdwatcher's dream. Paraíso Quetzal Lodge has managed to respect and safeguard the Cloud Forest. Its varied fauna, especially the quetzal, make this place a good sightseeing area. A gentle 1.5 km (1 mile) walk through the cloud forest will lead you to the Quetzals habitat. The hike takes approximately 2 hours, led by a nature guide equipped with spotting scope and bird guide, who provides detailed explications along the way. Epiphytes, such as orchids and bromeliads, make this tour a gratifying experience en route to your possible encounter with the Quetzal. Despite its normally reticent and silent behavior, the male, during the mating season, sometimes emits a wide range of sounds to attract a nearby female and so initiate their reproductive cycle.

Day 4
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge Breakfast, Dinner

This day your private guide and driver will take you to the town of Puerto Jimenez. The duration of the transfer is 4½ hour approximately. Once in Puerto Jimenez you will meet the staff of the hotel who will provide you the transfer to the hotel (1 hour approximately in a gravel road).

This tiny patch of Costa Rica’s last remaining tropical humid rainforest holds nothing less than 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity. Osa Peninsula is home to more than 750 species of trees -with close to 80 being endemic to the Osa conservation area-, 117 species of reptiles and amphibians, 365 species of birds and over 120 species of mammals. The area holds the largest population of Scarlet Macaws in the country, and is well known for being the home of iconic species like the tapir, the jaguar and the enormous humpback whales. El Remanso is oriented to those seeking to enjoy a rainforest experience. You may see monkeys, exotic birds and the colorful frogs in the grounds. Explore hidden valleys with botanical treasures or lagoons and tide pools at the beach. The observant hiker can find sloths, kinkajous, eagles, toucans and parrots. Recent sightings include, ocelots, pumas and several species of rare endemic birds. Secluded waterfalls and pools deep in the forest provide a unique experience.

Day 5
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hike the Ridge Trail, Long Hike

A resident naturalist guide will take you on one of several different trails where you may see Scarlet macaws, toucans, parrots, hawks, tanagers, and many other types of birds. There are over 400 species of birds identified in the local area. The most commonly seen mammals are monkeys. There are 4 types in Costa Rica, and all of them can be seen here: Howler monkey, Spider monkey, White face, and Squirrel. Other commonly seen animals are white lipped and collared Peccaries, Coatis, Agoutis, Tayras, Kinkajous, Sloths, Armadillos and Anteaters. Occasional spottings on the refuge include pumas, ocelots, margays and jagarundis. There are also a host of amphibians and insects to observe such as poisonous frogs, iguanas, morpho butterflies, leaf to cutter ants and more.

Waterfall Rappelling

This is a popular experience in the rain forest areas, and since 1995 the first of its kind in Costa Rica. Visit four waterfalls and hours of activity in a deep forest setting. Rappelling (also known as abseiling or canyoning) takes you into the heart of the forest through a wild river canyon at El Remanso. Our Waterfall Rappelling experience can be completed by most reasonably fit people with a good sense of balance. After rappelling the first waterfall, you follow the river to the second, then third waterfall. The highest is saved for last as the fourth waterfall is a 70 foot high. Bring your cameras for this one as the photo opportunities are available. The light filters through the canopy towering above you and reflects off the many pools.

Night Hike at El Remanso Trails

Meet your nature guide in the lobby and join the nature night walk. Shortly before sunset you leave on one of the trails together with a guide to experience “the other half” of the rainforest. You may spot bats, spiders, lizards, frogs and snakes with the help of your guide.

Day 6
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Corcovado National Park Guided Hike

Today you’ll be visiting the National Park Corcovado from the southernmost entrance. La Leona Ranger’s Station is the entry to the park coming by road from Jiménez. You’ll be leaving the lodge early in the morning in order to take advantage of your time at the park trails. Breakfast will be served at 05:30 and you’ll be departing from El Remanso Lodge about 06:00 am. First, you’ll be transferred by 4x4 vehicles to the end of the road in Carate; the ride takes about 1 hour. From the tiny village of Carate, you’ll have to take a walk on the beach to finally reach this fairly remote National Park Rangers’ Station.

The walk on the beach takes from 30 to 45 more minutes (1.6 miles or 2.5 Kms). Once at the entry to the park, your nature guide will start a hike along some of the different trails. Most of the paths are pretty flat and follow the coastal line, but the guide might decide to go on some steep trails in order to look for wildlife. There’re good chances to spot several species of mammals like monkeys, wild boars, Agoutis, Coatis and bats. Also, there’re many species of reptiles and dozens of different birds in the area, plus the abundant tropical flora. At the end, you’ll be ready to return on the beach and then by vehicle to the lodge.

Day 7
San José, Costa Rica
Hotel Bougainvillea Breakfast

Bird Watching at El Remanso Gardens & Trails

Meet you nature guide and walk around the lodge premises and "hot spots" recommended by your guide. With its 75ha (190 acres) of private reserve, El Remanso offers plenty of opportunities to spot your favorite birds. You may see White Hawks, Scarlett Macaws, Toucans and hummingbirds as well as any species from the over 400 that make Osa Peninsula their home. You accompany the guide in his search for interesting birds and wildlife in general

Around 11:30 a.m. the staff of the hotel will provide you the transfer back to Puerto Jimenez (1 hour approximately) where you will board your domestic Sansa flight to San José (50 minutes approximately).

Upon arrival a 40 min shared land transfer will be provided to your hotel.

Day 8
San José, Costa Rica
International Airport None

Transfer to the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) at least three hours prior to the departure time for your flight out of the country (20 - 40 min drive).

Excellent accomodation and tours

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.
