In this three hour tour we’ll join a local curator, gallery owner or practicing artist to explore the fast paced and ever-changing world of contemporary art in New York. Whether you are well versed in the language of contemporary art or a curious novice, our small group (6 people max) gallery tour will introduce you to the latest installations by big name artists and emerging talent alike.
Focusing on the formerly industrial turned glamorous neighborhood of Chelsea, we will learn how this area became a nexus for the commercial gallery scene in the late 20th century. Exploring some of the city’s most well established galleries and early pioneers of Chelsea such as Mary Boone and Matthew Marks, we’ll discuss the dichotomy of the New York art market and the museum world. We will also find our way to several smaller boutique and ephemeral “pop-up” spaces, often the showcase for emerging artists and experimental works, where we’ll learn about the many directions in which contemporary art is headed in the 21st century.
As installations and shows change rapidly in the gallery world, the exact course of our tour will vary from day to day. Relying on the insight and expertise of our guide, and focusing on some of the most interesting and exciting current installations, we’ll gain a solid understanding of the New York’s arts scene by the end of our time together.
