This five-mile round-trip hike is designed to show off the unique faces of the mighty Mendenhall Glacier. Led by a naturalist guide, the tour begins with an introduction to Juneau and a narrated drive out to the trailhead. Here, you will pause to shoot glacial landscapes and floating icebergs. If the local wildlife is cooperative, this can be a great chance to spot spawning salmon and black bears, as well. As you begin your hike, you will get several vantages of the glacier as you work your way up a forested path to the spur trail. Here, the terrain becomes more difficult, and you’ll find yourself doing some rock scrambling before reaching the peak (an elevation gain of 300 feet)—where your efforts will be rewarded as the glacier spans out magnificently below. If time permits, you will have the opportunity to hike to the glacier’s edge for great photo ops of striated bedrock and crystal blue seracs. Mother Nature puts on a spectacular show in this timeless land of snow-capped peaks and rugged icefalls.
