A leisurely stroll through Rome's atmospheric city center is a great way to start your visit. During this two-hour orientation walk we'll discover Rome at its most glorious time: twilight, when Romans flood the streets to stroll some of the world's most picturesque roads and piazzas or, in Italian, to make a passeggiata.

Since this is an orientation level walk it does not go in-depth into architecture, art, or history, but rather looks at the broader picture. It is usually led by a docent who has lived in the city for a long time and can give you a sense of what makes Rome at night so special, help you frame your visit, and answer a lot of the questions that come up on day one in a foreign city. This walk is a great way to start your Roman adventure and situate yourself in the city, learning and enjoying in equal measure.

We begin in one of the most famous public spaces in Rome, Piazza Navona. The political and historical background of the piazza is discussed as well as its modern incarnation as a magnet for street performers and visitors in search of that perfect outdoor cafe seat with the direct view of Bernini's fabulous fountain. We continue on to the side streets around Piazza Navona, which in recent years has morphed into a very hip area crammed with wine bars, art galleries and funky designer clothes stores. We'll linger by a number of important churches, such as Santa Maria della Pace and Chiesa Nuova. We may explore the elegant streets of via Giulia and via Monserrato which are both filled with Renaissance palazzos, Baroque churches, and artisan workshops or head to the area of the Campo de' Fiori which is one of the busiest piazzas in Rome filled with young and old, tourists and locals, students and workers at all hours of the day and night.

If time allows, we will end the walk on the picturesque Ponte Sisto, which offers great views of the Tiber in both directions, a glimpse of Michelangelo's cupola of St. Peter's Basilica and a gateway to another exciting Roman neighborhood, Trastevere.

This is an orientation level walk. We will spend a certain amount of time explaining the sites along the route; but we will also try to situate you in the city, orient you to the major areas, and answer any of your questions. In short, it is an excellent walk to take at the beginning of your stay here.

Context Travel: One very good tour, one medium good tour

We had two tours, one entitled "Intro to HK: Colony to Financial Powerhouse" and the other "Kowloon Street Food Tour". The first had an architectural as well as historical framework, which was worthwhile, and our guide was very earnest and enthusiastic. We liked her very much. Our second tour, ostensibly a "Kowloon Street Food" got a little off track onto some political topics (reference is made in the description to discussing "local issues") but we made clear to our guide that we much preferred to spend our limited time checking out the street food and markets, and leaving politics and history aside. (Every guide prior to this had given us a similar capsule history of HK.) In fairness to our review of the guide, my wife and I were extremely tired by the time of our evening tour, and had to conclude the tour early, and we do not fault our guide in any way for our "running out of steam". Our guide was nice, though he made a couple of comments that might have been better left unsaid.

We were highly impressed with context tours. Each guide was very knowledgeable and the private group setting allowed us to really spend time and enjoy each site without feeling like we were part of a herd. Further, the guide is interactive, not just dictating into a radio with information.
