Day 1
Belfast, Ireland
Dublin, Ireland
None Lunch, Dinner

Settle into your cosy en suite cabin and enjoy the views as the train leaves Dublin behind on its journey north, following the east coast, towards Belfast. Lunch is served en route in the two elegant dining cars named after the Irish counties of Wexford and Sligo.

Alight in Belfast to visit Hillsborough Castle, the official Northern Ireland residence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Members of the royal family have regularly used the castle as their home on their visits since 1922.

Re-join the train in Belfast and enjoy your first dinner in the elegant dining cars, as your journey continues towards Dundalk in County Louth, known as the ‘Land of Legends’.

Day 2
Waterford, Ireland
None Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Sit back and soak up the views. Brunch is served before arriving in Waterford on the south-east coast, founded by Vikings in 914A.D.

This afternoon, explore some of the many historic attractions of Kilkenny in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East. Visit Butler House, the charming 18th-century Georgian Dower House of Kilkenny Castle, nestled in the very heart of this vibrant city.

Back on board, pre-dinner drinks and canapés await followed by entertainment afterwards in the Observation Car.

Day 3
Dublin, Ireland
Westbury Hotel, Dublin Breakfast

A leisurely breakfast is served as the train travels north and returns to Dublin Heuston Station.

Disembark for your overnight stay at the Westbury Hotel, Dublin.

Day 4
Cork, Ireland
None Dinner, Snack

After breakfast at the hotel, set off on an optional guided visit to EPIC - THE Irish Emigration Museum, before it opens to the public. This immersive, interactive museum in Dublin’s Docklands shows how 10 million Irish emigrants influenced and shaped other regions of the world. Your tour ends with a genealogy talk and morning refreshments.

Return to Belmond Grand Hibernian and then Disembark in Cork for a short walking tour of nearby Cobh with a renowned local historian.

Re-join Belmond Grand Hibernian in Cork just in time for dinner as the train makes its way north to Charleville.

Day 5
Killarney, Ireland
None Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Enjoy a leisurely a-la-carte Irish breakfast as you travel south towards Cork where you are offered a choice of morning activities.

Join your Host for a historical walking tour of this vibrant riverside city in the company of an entertaining local guide.

Alternatively, learn about the complex process of Irish whiskey-making at the world-famous Jameson Distillery in Midleton, accompanied by a Craft Ambassador.

Return to the train for lunch on the move en route to Killarney, set on the shores of Lough Leane in County Kerry. Alight for an entertaining trip in a traditional jaunting car as your driver, locally known as a ‘jarvey’ escorts you on a gentle trot through Killarney National Park to the beautiful lake by the 15th-century Ross Castle. Board the Lily of Killarney boat for a scenic voyage and learn about some of the many colourful legends of the lough.

Return to the train to relax or spend a little time exploring Killarney with its cobbled lanes, quaint shops and plentiful pubs. Pre-dinner drinks and canapés are served before dinner. Round off the evening in convivial style listening to after-dinner entertainment in the Observation Car.

Day 6
Galway, Ireland
None Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Sit back and enjoy the ever-changing scenery as you spend a relaxing morning on board.

A leisurely brunch is served before the train arrives along the west coast to Galway, one of Ireland’s most engaging cities, where the River Corrib meets the Atlantic Ocean. Here, choose from three ways to spend your afternoon.

For a glimpse into rural Irish life, drive into the rolling hills behind Galway to a local sheep farm to watch a sheepdog demonstration as the farmer relates stories of life in the country.

Or for nature lovers, visit the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Moher, which soar 700ft above the Atlantic Ocean. From one of many vantage points you might glimpse the Aran Islands and Twelve Bens Mountains on a clear day.

Alternatively for those who wish to explore, choose to spend the whole afternoon in Galway and join a knowledgeable local guide for an introductory walking tour of this ‘City of Tribes’, so-called as for centuries it was run by 14 merchant families.

Re-join the train in time for pre-dinner drinks and canapés as the train makes its way towards Athlone on the River Shannon in the heart of Ireland.

Day 7
Westport, Ireland
None Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning the train travels north-west to Westport on the coast of County Mayo where a full day’s activities await. Your first stop is the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life. Set in the magnificent grounds of Turlough Park House, the museum gives you an insight into rural Irish lifestyles between 1850 and 1950, with eye-catching displays relating to agriculture, fishing, crafts, customs and clothing.

A hearty lunch is served in a local tavern before your visit to Westport House, one of the country’s best-loved stately homes with rich interiors dating back over 350 years. The house was built on the foundations of one of the many castles which belonged to Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Connacht who ruled the land and seas around the estate. Grace’s dungeons can still be seen today in the basement area of the house. The vast expanse of Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and Ireland’s holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, in the distance provide an idyllic backdrop. Walk in the leafy gardens and woodland trails and perhaps witness a hawk-flying display.

There is time to explore Westport’s bustling Georgian town centre with its pretty river, tree-lined promenade and independent boutiques before re-joining the train in time for pre-dinner cocktails and canapés as you travel east towards Roscommon. Retire to the Observation Car after dinner for a nightcap and entertainment.

Day 8
Dublin, Ireland

The Orient Express- All that you can imagine it is.

By: John from NJ

Reviewed on: 20 Nov 2013

Our travel on the Orient Express earlier this year was its initial run from Stockholm to Copenhagen, WE had previously ridden its classic run from Paris to Venice in previous years. The carriages are classics, the service impeccable, the food wonderful. If you are wondering if its just like its depicted in the movies it is !

Great Tour

Our tour from Lima to Cusco to Machu Picchu and back was very good.  Had a wonderful guide, Luis (Dias I think).  Very informative and passionate about his topic.  Arrangements--hotels and train--were very good.  A complaint would be that hotel rooms assigned to us were with 2 beds rather than a double.  We had to upgrade to get that.  We prefer to travel as the couple we are and were never asked in advance about our preference for such arrangements.  (And I'm not aware of any Virtuoso Amenities)

Belmond Grand Hibernian

By: Amanda

Reviewed on: 31 Jul 2017

We had a lovely time on the Belmond Grand Hibernian. The staff was excellent and the food was incredible. It was a low-stress way to see Ireland (no driving) and the spots selected for each day trip were great. For future travelers I would recommend: if you're on the youngish side of things (we are in our early 40s), I'd bring friends -- the train is pretty much quiet by 10pm after dinner, so we really enjoyed have friends with us to play cards and talk in the bar car at the end of the evening. Also, the trip isn't one continuous loop around Ireland - you do some back tracking each day - it's fine but doesn't give you the feeling of seeing "new" countryside with each leg of the journey.
