Cloud Forest

The areas located on the Caribbean Watershed of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range consist of Cloud Forest with a broad variety of epiphytic growth. The wet-cold conditions are perfect for a great number of orchids, bromeliads, lichens and moss that proliferate in the area. The forest is surrounded by National Parks in what is known as Central Volcanic Conservation Area; therefore, the different species of birds and mammals are abundant. The elevation in this area goes from 9000 to 5000 feet (2700 mts – 1300mts), forming several habitats for individuals like the Resplendent Quetzal or the Black Guans; some hard to spot species of birds. The different lodges in this area offer Cloud Forest Exploration trails, hikes and horseback riding. The almost always cold and humid conditions observed here throughout the year, are not commonly seen and enjoyed in any other part of the country. The misty conditions that prevail in this region of Costa Rica characterize the landscape, vegetation and fauna. Despite the high number of species found in the area, the spotting might be tricky. The lodges offer Nature Guides who are real experts on location and identification of the various species of birds and plants.

Day 2
Bajos del Toro , Costa Rica
El Silencio Lodge & Spa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Riverside Hike: Gardens & Waterfalls

El Silencio Lodge is located on volcanic slopes covered by dense cloud forest. This type of forest is a natural “water tower” which feeds numerous creeks and rivers in the area.

El Silencio Lodge offers different hikes that show this evergreen vegetation. The waterfalls hike starts at the lodge and quickly penetrates the forest thanks to well-maintained trails. The stone-surface pathway will take you along characteristic cloud forest vegetation such as epiphytic growth including bromeliads, Cyclanthaceae and wild orchids, as well as “dwarf trees” like Escalonias and Copey. There are good opportunities to spot several species of birds like Common Bush-tanagers, Redstarts and hummingbirds like the Green-crowned Brilliant or the Purple-throated Mountain Gem. As part of your hike, you will cross a one rustic hanging bridge a few feet over ground. The trail leads to the waterfalls located within the property. El Silencio did set up some tables at the last waterfalls to rest and enjoy the view. Afterwards, you will head back to the lodge.

Highland & Rural Village Horseback Ride

Meet your Riding Guide and your Wrangler in the lobby for your horseback day in El Silencio Lodge surroundings. The horses are brought by the hotel staff to the lodge and they are assigned according to experience, weight and height of participants. Once the staff has made sure you are comfortable on your saddle, the horses will start heading to a private farm. The first mile approximately will be riding on paved road with very light traffic, and then your Guide will open the gate to enter the pasture lands near the lodge. You may have to cross some creeks before you take a break, get off the horses to relax and enjoy the landscape. The riding trails are mostly flat without steep or excessively abrupt descents. Your Guide and Wrangler are on charge of helping everyone back on the horses to return to the El Silencio.

Day 3
Bajos del Toro, Costa Rica
El Silencio Lodge & Spa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Bajos del Toro Mountains

Day in the mountains with the following activities included:

Chocolate from A-Z at La Tirimbina

A former cocoa bean plantation embedded in the thick tropical forest of the nearby Sarapiqui basin sets the stage for a delightful (and delicious) adventure. A guided hike is followed by a thorough, hands-on chocolate making session. From cracking open the cocoa fruit, to hand grinding, and adding some extra ingredients, the process is thoroughly explained. Perfect for kids and every adult’s inner child. Located 1 hour away from El Silencio Lodge & Spa.

Descent of Bajos del Toro Waterfall

For this excursion you will board the Lodge 4x4 vehicle that will take you through the small Bajos del Toro village. After 15 minutes’ drive, you will be ready to get started on your way down to the falls. In order to approach this waterfall, you need to descend approximately 400 feet and 365 steps on a winding trail. The waters of Toro Amarillo River flow through an extinct volcanic crater which is surrounded by natural vegetation and multicolor geologic formations. The red and yellow clays combine with green moss and the cooling mist. The steps seem to multiply on the way back to the restaurant. There are several hummingbird feeders located at the restaurant that attract several local colorful species. After the challenging climb, your vehicle will be waiting at the parking area to drive you back to the lodge.

Day 4
Arenal, Costa Rica
Arenal Kioro Suites & Spa Breakfast, Dinner

Private transfer to the volcano (2 hours)

The Arenal Volcano National Park is located within the much larger Arenal Conservation Area, which protects more than 500,000 acres of rain forest, rivers, lakes and old volcanic lava fields. This area contains a great wealth of geologic and biological complexity. The volcano itself is approximately 5,500 feet high and has gone through several eruptive cycles. Within the national park, short trails pass through secondary forest as well as lava fields from previous eruptions. Arenal also plays an interesting role in Costa Rica's power production- Lake Arenal, which rests at the base of the volcano, supplies a high percentage of the country's hydroelectric energy. The area is home to a remarkable biodiversity and variety of habitats. Arenal Volcano activity continues, although it has decreased since 2010 and is now mostly fumarolic with occasional phreatic eruptions at the top of the mountain - this means there are no lava flows, but that hiking up to close the crater can be very dangerous - do not do it. The geologic activity makes for hot springs with surprisingly high temperatures of up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. A growing tourism industry has taken advantage of this natural resource to heat up pools and fountains for the amusement of visitors, together with activities such as mountain biking, canopy rides, horseback riding and kayaking on the lake

Day 5
Arenal, Costa Rica
Arenal Kioro Suites & Spa Breakfast, Dinner

Arenal volcano

Day in the volcano with the following activities included:

Arenal Sky Adventure Park Canopy Zip Line

Meet your Transfer Guide in the lobby and drive to a private reserve near the north-facing slopes of the Cordillera de Tilarán which offer volcano views, to be enjoyed from an aerial Sky Tram that rises 236 meters (780 feet) in a 1250 meters (4125 feet) ride, taking visitors up to a mirador (lookout point) where the Canopy Zip Line circuit starts. There are currently ten zip line cables and they range in height from 30 meters (100 feet) to 200 meters (660 feet) and in length from 200 meters (660 feet) to 750 meters (2475 feet). Before leaving the main building to start your tour, you will be fitted with all of the necessary safety equipment (harness, helmet, gloves), which the guides will take care to properly adjust. Afterwards the guides will deliver a safety speech detailing proper form and the innovative braking system. Zipping along nearly two miles (three kilometers) of cables, you will see the rain forest as well as get a panoramic view of the volcano and lake from a whole new perspective

Day 6
Arenal, Costa Rica
Arenal Kioro Suites & Spa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Pure Trek Waterfall Rappel

Your transfer guide will pick you up at your hotel in La Fortuna area and drive on a mountain road to the first ranch house. They put your gear on, give you a short safety and rappelling explanation and then a short trek on a rainforest trail to the first waterfall rappel where you will descend into the canyon

The 5 rappels range in heights of 13 m (25 ft ) to 55 m (165 ft). The Monkey Drop Zip Line is approximately 25 m (82 ft) long. After rappelling down the first waterfall you will climb up the side of the canyon wall, 10 m (20 ft), to a short trail. Then zip line across the canyon and rappel down from the cable 25 m (82 ft) to the canyon floor again. You´ll continue on short trails from waterfall to waterfall through the canyon. Later, you´ll take a short trek out of the canyon to the second ranch house where you meet up with the 4x4 vehicles and then back to the base offices for a delicious Costa Rican style lunch just outside La Fortuna with a view of the Arenal Volcano.

Arenal Hanging Bridges Canopy Walkway

This project consists of eight fixed bridges, ranging in length between 8 and 22 meters, and six hanging bridges, built with the latest techniques and designed with an eye for both beauty and safety. The hanging bridges are between 48 and 98 meters long. All the bridges are made of galvanized steel and high-strength aluminum. The safety mesh and the suspension cables are all galvanized steel. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact. The trails, covering a distance of about 3.1 km, are right inside the forest. As you walk, you can appreciate a great diversity of flowers and wildlife that are typical of the rain forest as well as some imposing views of the Volcano (weather permitting).

Excellent accomodation and tours

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.
