For millennia Rome’s elites have flocked to the Tivoli area northeast of Rome for its fresher climate, curative waters and hill views. Join your expert guide to explore its regal palaces and glorious gardens... The more things change, people say, the more they stay the same. That is certainly true for Tivoli, a town nestled in the foothills of the Tiburtini Mountains. Overstressed and overheated Romans have been taking the 20-mile journey to its cooler climes and curative sulfur springs literally for millennia. Today, you’ll follow in their footsteps with your expert local guide and driver. First we explore glorious Villa d’Este, the 16th-century residence of Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, which he built as a sort of consolation prize after he failed to win the papacy. Over the centuries, subsequent cardinal owners embellished his already extravagant designs, creating a terraced paradise of fragrant flora and fantastical fountains that was rightfully recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Also on that list is the Villa Adriana, the vast summer residence of 2nd-century Roman Emperor Hadrian. Extending over 250 acres, the complex included swimming pools, libraries, massive thermal baths and monumental piazzas. With evocative anecdotes and historical insight, your guide will make these ruins come alive – including the impressive Maritime Theater, Hadrian’s moated retreat, where this creative genius withdrew to escape from the cares of imperial life.
