Ecuadorian Rainforest Experience (4 days)

Day 1
Tena, Ecuador
Minga Lodge Dinner

Arrival in Coca; transfer by River Boat.

After you collect your luggage, you'll be transferred to a boat port on the banks of the Rio Napo. Sit back and enjoy the 2 hour ride, feeling a cool breeze on your face as your guide gives you an insider’s view of Amazon River culture.

Minga Lodge Arrival & Orientation

Step off the boat at Minga Lodge just in time to take in your first spectacular Amazonian sunset over the Rio Napo. Your lush tropical surroundings will be glowing pink and orange as you snack on local treats like plantain chips and yucca fritters, washed down with a glass of chilled guayusa tea.

Follow a ME to WE team member along winding stone pathways and raised walkways to your cabin nestled into the jungle.

Meet with our team to learn about the WE Villages development model. Our local staff work with rural villages and regional governments to support, teach and empower people within five Pillars of Impact:

1. Education: Quality primary education

2. Water: Safe/clean drinking water and sanitation systems

3. Health: Sanitation & health care services

4. Food: Agriculture and food security

5. Opportunity: Alternative income projects

Welcome Dinner

Let the aromas of cumin, oregano, garlic and onion be your guide as you make your way back to the dining hall from your cabin, along meandering stone pathways and over a footbridge across the creek. Feast on Western favorites and local delicacies like heart of palm, stinging nettle and fish cooked in palm leaves. Add some fire to the meal with a scoop of ajihot sauce, if you dare!

Optional: Wild Amazonian Night Walk

When the sun goes down, the rainforest comes alive. Join your jungle guide for an adventurous night walk to discover the incredible array of nocturnal wildlife that calls the jungle home. You might spot frogs, spiders, tree snakes and owls—but with tens of thousands of species in the Amazon Basin, there's no limit to what this one-of-a-kind experience might have in store.

Day 2
Tena, Ecuador
Minga Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Community Orientation and Volunteering

After breakfast, take a quick jungle walk or canoe ride to a nearby WE Villages community. Here, you'll have an opportunity to interact with local members and together, contribute to an ongoing sustainable development project such as laying the foundation for a new classroom.

Back at the lodge, join fellow travellers for lunch on our indoor-outdoor dining terrace, which offers stunning views of the nearby river.

A Day in the Life

There’s no better way to understand the ways of local people than by walking a mile in their shoes. Meet a local farmer and join their family to carry out their daily activities, such as planting seeds, collecting water from the river and harvesting crops.

Connect with the group as you gather around the dinner table for a family style feast, and share in the excitement of a day packed to the brim with new experiences.

Optional: Wild Amazonian Night Hike

Day 3
Tena, Ecuador
Minga Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning Rainforest Excursion

Before breakfast, explore beyond the property trails and hike through the rainforest, where, if you are lucky, you may see a myriad of flora and fauna, including toucans, Long-tailed Potoos, gargantuan cebo trees and countless species of insects, spiders and snakes. We can arrange hikes from between 30 min to 1 hour: let your guide know what you would prefer.

Volunteering in the Community

Continue the momentum on the build site. As you work, remember to take many water breaks and chat with the community members working alongside you.

Reconvene with the group back at the lodge for lunch and a bit of down time before carrying on with the remainder of the day. Kick your feet up for a quick afternoon siesta in your hammock, or join friends for a game of cards in the shade.

Shamanic Ceremony and Weapons Training

Let a local shaman guide you and your fellow travelers to a nearby vantage point high above the river for a traditional cleansing ceremony and blessing. For an ethereal and earnestly Amazonian experience, close your eyes and allow the divine smoke to be wafted over you, propelled by large jungle leaves. Next, channel your inner Kichwa hunter and learn firsthand from an indigenous weapons expert how to throw a spear and shoot a blowgun. Test your precision alongside a friend as you both take aim at targets of papayas mounted on sticks

Share trip photos and stories with your group over a sunset dinner. Tune into your senses and enjoy the warm breeze on your skin, the rich tastes in your mouth and the surrounding sounds of the jungle.

Trip of a lifetime

By: Piper

Reviewed on: 21 Jan 2018

Me to We was recommended to my husband and I as a way to see another part of the world and also be able to give back. We went to the conference in Seattle last spring with our travel agent, Pam Anderson and we were moved by their story. The trip did not disappoint. Me to We accommodations were impeccable, the food exceeded expectations, the adventures and experiences were fun and educational. I would recommend these trips to anyone wanting to make a difference and have fun.
