Valid for Departures Now Through: 31 Aug 2018

Itinerary

DAY LOCATION(S) HOTEL MEALS DESCRIPTION
Day 1
San José, Costa Rica
Hotel Grano de Oro None

After passing through Immigration and customs meet your Costa Rica Expeditions guide, who will take you to your hotel.

Arrive at Juan Santamaria International Airport, after exiting the plane, first follow the signs to immigration where you will have to wait in line to get your passport checked and stamped. Continue to baggage claim and customs. There are carts in the baggage claim area that are free of charge, so grab one of those while you wait for your luggage to come out on the designated carousel.

If your flight is arriving between the hours of 7 am- 10 pm, you may be greeted by a representative from the Costa Rican chamber of tourism. If so they will give you a sticker that identifies you to customs officials as a tourist. These representatives are not always available, and if you don’t see them don’t worry, as the sticker is a courtesy and not a necessity.

Once you have your luggage, you’ll need to get in line to go through customs. Normally this consists of putting your luggage and carryon luggage on a conveyor belt to be x-rayed; when it’s your turn to put your luggage on the conveyor belt you will have to give the Customs Official the form that you filled out on the plane. Once you’ve retrieved your luggage, you can exit the airport.

Day 2
Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens Breakfast

Today a 20 - 40 min shared land transfer will be provided to the local airstrip.

Meet your 30 minute flight from San José to Tortuguero. You will be greeted at the airstrip and will cross the Tortuguero River by boat to Tortuga Lodge.

Day 3
Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens Breakfast

At Tortuguero National Park with the following activities included:

Dawn Wildlife Boat Tour

You will be in the rainforest when it wakes. Rise at the crack of dawn for coffee and a light snack before boarding a boat with your Tortuguero guide (shared with other guests) for a 6:00 to 8:00 AM visit to Tortuguero National Park. Eleven habitats are found in the park. Three species of monkeys (Spider, Howler, and White-faced), Three-toed sloths, and River otters are frequently seen along the natural inland waterways and canals. Caiman, iguanas, River turtles, Basilisk lizards, and Poison dart (Dendrobates) frogs inhabit the area, along with more than 320 species of birds including all 6 species of kingfishers found in the new world, 3 species of toucans, 8 species of parrots, and other neotropical species such. Return to the lodge in time for breakfast.

Tortuguero National Park Wildlife Boat Tour

After lunch and a siesta, leave the dock by boat with your Tortuguero local naturalist Guide and your fellow guests for your afternoon expedition into the creeks of Tortuguero National Park.

You will often find that in the early afternoon the foraging is quite intense, but as the afternoon sun starts to go down, many creatures begin to think about bedding down for the night and others are just beginning their night time activity. If you’re lucky you might even get to see a mixed flock of Egrets coming into their rookery for the night or a pair of Tiger herons having a discussion about whose turn it is to sit on the nest. The White Faced Capuchins, ever mischievous may be the last to bed down, but as the afternoon light dims, the cacophony of the forest comes to a climax and then as if on cue… quiet. This tour is a three hour trip into the back water lagoons and creeks of Tortuguero National Park.

Day 4
Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Le Cameleon Breakfast

Early Morning Bird Walk Tortuga Lodge Gardens

Tortuga Lodge is located at the edge of well conserved rain forest at the Caribbean watershed. The local avifauna is quite numerous and the possibilities to observe several species of birds at the gardens are very good. Every morning, departing at 6:00 a.m. from the reception, the Tortuga Lodge local guides will lead a natural history walk in the premises. You may spot oropendulas, raptors, king fishers, trogons, toucans, warblers and wrens among many more. Don’t miss out on the opportunity. Sign up at the front desk the night before.

Mid-morning departure by boat with a local guide for the 1 - 1.5 hour trip to La Pavona dock.

Upon arrival meet your Spanish speaking driver who will take you for the 4 - 4.5 hour drive to Puerto Viejo Beach Town.

Southern Caribbean Area

This region is enclosed by the high Talamanca Mountains that reach up to 13.000 feet and separate the Caribbean from the Pacific along the Continental Divide. This area is also our territorial boundary with our neighboring country: Panama. The entire area has an important cultural component formed by indigenous native groups like the Bribris or Kekoldi, and the Cabecares. The Bribri community is closer to the lowlands and beaches, while the Cabecar settles on higher lands. It takes approximately 5 to 5.5 hours to drive from San Jose on fairly good paved road most of the way. The nature wealth is also significant in this area. The bird life in the environs is extensive, as well as the mammals population, reptiles and numerous species of insects and spiders. Besides, the proximity to the Caribbean Sea offers opportunities for the reef snorkeling, marine life observation and nature hiking along the beaches.

Day 5
Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Le Cameleon Breakfast

Cahuita National Park Snorkeling

The experience takes place close to the small village of Cahuita. Your transportation will pick you up from different hotels and drive you to the park. The snorkeling area is between 30 minutes to 1 hour away from most of the hotels. Your captain and snorkeling guide will take you by boat to the reef area to commence the activity.

Description

Have you heard about Tortuguero National Park and Cahuita National Park?

Tortuguero National Park now protects 77,032 acres or 30,812 hectares, one of the last large areas of tropical rain forest in Central America. Eleven habitats are found in the park. Three species of monkeys (Spider, Howler, and White-faced), Three-toed sloths, and River otters are frequently seen along the natural inland waterways and canals. Caiman, iguanas, River turtles, Basilisk lizards, and Poison dart (Dendrobates) frogs inhabit the area, along with more than 320 species of birds including all 6 species of kingfishers found in the new world, 3 species of toucans, 8 species of parrots, and other neotropical species such as the Slaty-tailed trogon, White-collared manakin, Purple-throated fruitcrow, and White-fronted nunbird and many more species.

Cahuita National Park is situated over the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Initially, the site was created as the Cahuita National Monument in 1970. Eventually, the legal frame was reformed to create a National Park in 1978. Cahuita National Park protects beaches and lowlands and also attracts many visitors who can snorkel in the protected marine area. The park features coral reefs and also provides nesting grounds for sea turtles. The reef is known to have over 30 species of coral and dozens of species of tropical fish like the Angelfish, Banded Butterflyfish, Blue Tang, Sergeant Major, Surgeonfish, Jacks and Damselfish among many more. Besides, you could possibly observe the Moray Eel or the Spotted Eel as well as some sea turtles.

We will wait for you!

Excellent accomodation and tours

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.

Costa Rica Expeditions was absolutely incredible!! Every detail was planned out perfectly, so that my husband and I did not have to worry about a thing. The tour guides were some of the friendliest people I have ever met. They made us feel like old friends and went out of their way with kindness.
