DAY LOCATION(S) HOTEL MEALS DESCRIPTION
Day 1
Liberia, Costa Rica
Hilton Garden Inn Liberia Airport None

Shuttle service from the airport to the hotel.

Day 2
Arenal, Costa Rica
Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort Breakfast

Private transfer to Arenal Volcano (4 hours).

The Arenal Volcano National Park is located within the much larger Arenal Conservation Area, which protects more than 500,000 acres of rain forest, rivers, lakes and old volcanic lava fields. This area contains a great wealth of geologic and biological complexity. The volcano itself is approximately 5,500 feet high and has gone through several eruptive cycles. Within the national park, short trails pass through secondary forest as well as lava fields from previous eruptions. Arenal also plays an interesting role in Costa Rica's power production- Lake Arenal, which rests at the base of the volcano, supplies a high percentage of the country's hydroelectric energy. The area is home to a remarkable biodiversity and variety of habitats. Arenal Volcano activity continues, although it has decreased since 2010 and is now mostly fumarolic with occasional phreatic eruptions at the top of the mountain - this means there are no lava flows, but that hiking up to close the crater can be very dangerous - do not do it. The geologic activity makes for hot springs with surprisingly high temperatures of up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. A growing tourism industry has taken advantage of this natural resource to heat up pools and fountains for the amusement of visitors, together with activities such as mountain biking, canopy rides, horseback riding and kayaking on the lake.

Day 3
Arenal, Costa Rica
Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort Breakfast, Lunch

Nature Hike at the Eternal Forest of the Children

Meet your guide in La Fortuna and drive to an area near the small village of La Tigra. La Tigra has a specific interest for historians since this is the place where the first women`s suffrage occurred in 1950. After a one hour ride in a four wheel drive vehicle through mountain routes, you’ll get to the Pocosol Station. The Station is a scientific center created for the research of flora and fauna in this biologically wealthy region of the country. The visitors’ center offers restrooms and facilities before starting your hike. Pocosol Station is the entry to the Eternal Forest and it’s located alongside a volcanic origin lagoon at 3,600 f (1100 meters) above sea level. Pocosol Station is administered by the Monteverde Conservationist Association, and holds 22.000 hectares of protected forest. It is also one of the most important reserves of Central America, and the largest private reserve in Costa Rica.

Your nature guide will explain about the main characteristics of the hike this morning and how to walk in the rain forest safely. The trails in this large private reserve are normally muddy due to the strong rains commonly happening in the area. You’ll hike on several types of trails, with some steep sections, exposed roots and high steps. The gradients are stronger in some points, specifically at the waterfall observation path. You’ll be able to observe patches of primary forest, the volcanic soil with its fumaroles, and the Pocosol Waterfall with a height over 50 meters (165 f). There’s an observation deck which allows us to watch the waterfall into a river canyon. You’ll have good opportunities to enjoy a great variety of plants, trees, ferns and selaginelas, as well as different critters like Peccaries, Monkeys, Coatis, Agoutis and many more species that can be observed from time to time.

Lunch will be served in the station.

Day 4
Arenal, Costa Rica
Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort Breakfast, Lunch

Rio Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park

You will leave La Fortuna at around 7:30 a.m. and drive 1 ½ hours to the Tenorio Volcano National Park, to begin the 7 km hike (approximately 4 hours) through the tropical rain forest. Arrive at “Los Teñíderos” of the Rio Celeste, the site where two streams of water come together and form the light blue color that gives the river its name.

Further along the hike, you will see the Rio Celeste waterfall. The final reward for the journey is a typical Costa Rican lunch served at the end of your experience in the rainforest.

Day 5
Arenal, Costa Rica
Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort Breakfast

Leisure day at the hotsprings.

Day 6
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Drive to San Jose (3 hours), to meet your flight to Osa Peninsula (60 minutes).

Please note that you will wet your feet upon arrival to the airstrip as you'll have to take a boat transfer to your hotel and there is no dock. La Paloma Lodge nests atop a high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and nearby Cano Island, in Costa Rica's isolated Drake Bay. The resort is spread over 12 richly landscaped acres and is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest.

Note: Due to the mountainous topography in Osa Peninsula and particularly in Corcovado area, the access pathway to the Lodge from the beach is very steep. There is transportation available to provide assistance to guests who do not wish to negotiate the abrupt hill.

Day 7
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Three full days at Drake Bay.
Day 8
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Caño Island Snorkeling Excursion

Caño Island Biological Marine Reserve is 12 nautical miles offshore from Drake Bay. The attraction is not necessarily found on its land, but underwater. The waters surrounding the island are some of the clearest in the country. The Island's dark, volcanic rock is home to numerous species including smaller brightly colored tropical fish, and the larger snapper, tuna, grouper, mackerel, jack, white tip shark, sea turtles, barracuda (typically in schools), manta rays, eels, porcupine fish, sea urchins, octopus, lobster, sponges and sea cucumbers. There are 15 or more types of stony coral species as well as the attendant coral eaters (starfish, mollusks, and hermit crabs). Visibility is good-to-excellent year round. The island is of considerable geographical and archeological importance. This 300-hectare piece of land was a burial ground dating back to the pre-Columbian era of the Diquis tribal people.

Day 9
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
La Paloma Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hike in Corcovado National Park – San Pedrillo Station

After breakfast leave with your local guide for a hike in Corcovado National Park. A 25 minute boat ride from the lodge will land you at the northern San Pedrillo entrance to the park Early morning is the best time to spot wildlife and observe the many species of birds found in the park. Frequent sighting include monkeys, coatimundis, squirrels, spiders, macaws, bats, leaf cutter ants, and more. Learn from your guide about the life in the rainforest. The hike will follow a river and visit a waterfall. This will be your chance to cool off in one of the shaded pools of the river. Afterwards, continue down river until reaching the Park Station at San Pedrillo. Located just offshore is Picaros Island, a refuge for several species of marine birds including the Brown Boobie, Blue Heron and Brown Pelican. At the Station, under shade trees on the beach, you will have a picnic lunch including fresh fruit and cold drinks. Afterward there will be time to explore the beach or relax.

Day 10
Conchal beach, Costa Rica
The Westin Golf Resort and Spa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Fly from Drake Bay, with a layover and plane change in San José. First, fly 40 min on the domestic airline SANSA from Drake Bay to San José. You will wait in the SANSA lounge at the airport for 2 hrs 23 min (often longer) and then continue on their scheduled flight to Liberia for 45 mins.

Drive to Conchal beach (60 minutes).

Conchal area is located in the province of Guanacaste; the northernmost territory of the country. This area is known for its views of the Pacific Ocean, Dry Forest & Wildlife, and the Conchal Beach with its characteristic white sand. The majority of the beaches in the country are volcanic, quite dark; therefore the presence of coral and a white beach are really difficult to find. The Pacific Ocean offers a comfortable temperature for swimming, snorkeling or surfing practically all year round. Guanacaste features an abundance of natural landscapes including active volcanoes, savannahs, and local vegetation. During the dry season, lots of flowering trees decorate this vast region, and there’re many species of birds and mammals that will be quite visible thanks to the lack of leaves in all deciduous trees. There’re populations of White-throated Capuchins, Howlers and Coatis that can be observed, as well as Green and Black Iguanas, Parrots, Magpie Jays and lots of marine mammals like dolphins or whales. There’re many different National Parks and Wildlife Reserves that can be visited from Conchal. The temperatures in the area fluctuate around averages 28°C / 85°F year round. Lately, there’re many new Resorts in the area, and different activities are offered like Zip Lining, Sport Fishing, ATVs and Horseback riding.

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.
