Meet with English speaking license guide at the entrance of your Hotel. After a 10’ drive reach the traditional village of Pyrgos. Pyrgos is built on the top of a hill and presents a panoramic view of the whole island. The village has a population of 500 inhabitants, and used to be the capital of the island until the early 1800s, the village is formed by traditional houses built all around the Venetian castle (view from a distance), and the small streets follow the shape of the hill. The village has many churches: the church of Theotokaki with its beautiful frescoes and old icons; Agia Triada, the churches of Agia Theodosia; Metamorphosi tou Sotira (Transfiguration of the Saviour); Agios Nikolaos; Eisodia tis Theotokou (Presentation of the Virgin Mary) and the Archangel Michael. Your guide will explain many things about the rich ecclesiastical history of the village.
Then, drive to the local Santo winery where a guided tour, a wine tasting of 3 local wines and a short video about the local wine making, will be offered at the installations of the winery of a total stowage of about 5,000 tons. The winery was built and is in operation since 1992. Enjoy the breathtaking view from the winery while your free time. The structure has been preserved in order to show the old way wine was once produced using the best of the islands’ fundamental elements. Carved into the natural volcanic rock are the cave-like vats. Also view antique presses that have been restored.
Upon completion of the visit you will proceed to the most northern tip of the island to experience the unique village of Oia. This dramatic small village built on a steep slope of the caldera has many of its dwellings nestled in niches hewn into the volcanic rock. As you walk through its narrow cobbled streets, you will come across many tiny shops which offer a varied and unusual collection of hand-made works of ceramic art, paintings and semi-precious jewellery. Oia, perched on the edge of the cliffs offers spectacular views of Fira and the volcano.
Drive to Fira, the picturesque capital town of the island, built on the caldera rim. Visit of the town and walk with the guide pointing out the highlights.
