Historical San Jose, Central Market & Food Tasting

San Jose is a city that can be valued in a better way by walking its streets and avenues. You can admire the architecture of the city's most emblematic buildings as well as its tree-shaded parks and cultural history told through its neighborhoods, buildings and monuments. During the tour, you’ll visit several emblematic places of the city such as the National Monument, the Old National Liquor Factory, Amón and Otoya neighborhoods, the Spain Park, the Metallic School, the Morazán Park and the Temple of Music. You’ll be part of a historical journey through the capital city that aims to show its most authentic face, and the small details that define the Costa Rican culture. Costa Rica has thousands of flavors to share. Right in downtown San Jose, you can find the Central Market, a place that has been the heart of the Costa Rican popular culture since 1880. The Market is known to offer a wide variety of vegetables, meats, seafood, spices, religious images and animals, as well as hosting some of the oldest and most famous ¨sodas¨ (casual restaurants) in the country. The different places offer varied menus, tradition and personal service. The Central Market is a place where all social classes converge and a visit to this location goes far beyond than just a simple shopping experience. Join us to discover the halls of this charming market. During the tour we will have the opportunity to visit stands that have remained in the same family for several generations and we will be able to taste local dishes such as ¨Tortilla Aliñada¨ (seasoned tortilla with cheese), ¨Chorreada¨ (sweet corn blasted with custard), ¨tamal asado¨, natural fruit drinks and the popular ¨sorbetera¨ ice cream.

Day 3
Pacuare River valley, Costa Rica
Pacuare Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This outdoor adventure begins when you are picked up at your San José hotel in a van and transported through the old capital city of Cartago and the green farmlands blanketing the slopes of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes. Before arriving at the banks of the Pacuare River, you’ll stop for a Costa Rican breakfast. The trip from San Jose to the river put in takes 3 – 3.5 hours including breakfast time. When you arrive at the river, your guides will provide you with the rafting gear and explain safety precautions before the rafting adventure begins. The river trip takes 1 – 1.5 hours, and passes through canyons where waterfalls plummet down into the rapidly coursing river below.

Tall trees and dense green vegetation come right down to the water’s edge.

The first day on the river is a journey that takes over an hour and a half on class II and III rapids. When you arrive at the Pacuare Lodge, you’ll find a jungle oasis. Trees and flowering shrubs dot the rolling green lawns on the banks of the river. Wooden bungalows with thatched palm roofs are spaced out beneath the trees, providing both privacy and serenity. The two-story main lodge has breezy dining facilities on the first floor, and chairs and hammocks in the open-air second floor lounge. After a hearty lunch, you can take a guided hike to a waterfall in the forest, play dominoes or cards, or just relax. Happy Hour begins as twilight descends, and guests can gather to share their experiences. Shortly after you’ll be served a candlelight dinner. Whenever you feel ready, you can head to your suite.

Day 4
Pacuare River valley, Costa Rica
Pacuare Lodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Full day in the Pacuare River valley. The lodge employs a resident naturalist guide who will provide you with unique insights into the plant and animal world. Choose from exciting optional tours that include guided hikes through the rainforest or the Cabecar Experience - where visitors may participate in a cultural exchange and a nature hike

Your stay includes:

Dinner in the Rainforest Canopy "The Nest"

The beauty of the rainforest surrounding the Pacuare Lodge has captivated visitors for years. Keeping this environment untouched and letting the guests experience the sights, sounds and scents of the rainforest has been Pacuare Lodge true inspiration. Just like the birds in the forest, Pacuare Lodge built its own "nest" on a canopy platform where you can enjoy a meal in a unique setting. The Nest is located 20 meters (60 feet) high in a treetop. To reach this platform, you will glide down a 130-meter (430 feet) cable to the high branches of a Ceiba: a tree that was sacred to the ancient Mayans.

There, you’ll find everything you need for an unforgettable dinner – an atmosphere of candles shimmering like fireflies amidst the branches, the sound of a breeze blowing through the surrounding foliage, the soft rumble of the Pacuare River below, and the aromas of the rain forest. You will choose the menu and the wine, but the setting is run by Mother Nature!

Day 5
Pacuare River valley, Costa Rica
Pacuare Lodge Breakfast

One full days in the Pacuare River valley:

Pacuare Canopy Zip Line

The Pacuare Canopy starts from the lodge, in the company of your expert zip line guides. The experience begins with a safety orientation and donning of specialized equipment. Our guests will then partake on an unhurried trek through tropical rainforest up to the first platform. This twenty-minute hike into the Pacuare Lodge’s private reserve will transport you into a realm of nature views and scenery. The area surrounding our eco lodge is very appreciated by bird watchers and nature lovers, and offers a close glimpse of Costa Rica’s biological diversity. Before exploring the canopy’s environment you will receive a complete review and demonstration of all guidelines. The activity includes rappelling down towering trees and sliding along cables from tree to tree as you descend the mountain towards the Pacuare Lodge. The canopy consists of cables and 1 rappel, and the cables go from 60 m (200 f) to 210 m (693 f) in length. There’re a total of 9 platforms on the trees and go from 33 f (10 m) to a maximum of 165 f (50 m) high. The maximum speed reached on the fastest cable is close to 19 miles per hour (30 K h). At the end, a final thrilling rappel will leave you just steps away from our main lodge!

Day 6
Arenal, Costa Rica
Nayara Hotel, Spa & Garden & Nayara Springs Breakfast

After a buffet breakfast, you’ll launch the rafts again for the second day of the river expedition. Rafting becomes even more thrilling as you begin to use the skills and experience gained the day before for approximately 3.5 hours over class III-IV rapids. Stop for a picnic lunch along the river. At the river take-out, you can change into dry clothes at the private facilities before boarding the van for the land transfer to Arenal.

The Arenal Volcano National Park is located within the much larger Arenal Conservation Area, which protects more than 500,000 acres of rain forest, rivers, lakes and old volcanic lava fields. This area contains a great wealth of geologic and biological complexity. The volcano itself is approximately 5,500 feet high and has gone through several eruptive cycles. Within the national park, short trails pass through secondary forest as well as lava fields from previous eruptions. Arenal also plays an interesting role in Costa Rica's power production- Lake Arenal, which rests at the base of the volcano, supplies a high percentage of the country's hydroelectric energy. The area is home to a remarkable biodiversity and variety of habitats. Arenal Volcano activity continues, although it has decreased since 2010 and is now mostly fumarolic with occasional phreatic eruptions at the top of the mountain - this means there are no lava flows, but that hiking up to close the crater can be very dangerous - do not do it. The geologic activity makes for hot springs with surprisingly high temperatures of up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. A growing tourism industry has taken advantage of this natural resource to heat up pools and fountains for the amusement of visitors, together with activities such as mountain biking, canopy rides, horseback riding and kayaking on the lake.

Day 7
Arenal, Costa Rica
Nayara Hotel, Spa & Garden & Nayara Springs Breakfast
Arenal Hanging Bridges Canopy Walkway

This project consists of eight fixed bridges, ranging in length between 8 and 22 meters, and six hanging bridges, built with the latest techniques and designed with an eye for both beauty and safety. The hanging bridges are between 48 and 98 meters long. All the bridges are made of galvanized steel and high-strength aluminum. The safety mesh and the suspension cables are all galvanized steel. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact. The trails, covering a distance of about 3.1 km, are right inside the forest. As you walk, you can appreciate a great diversity of flowers and wildlife that are typical of the rain forest as well as some imposing views of the Volcano (weather permitting).

Day 8
Arenal, Costa Rica
Nayara Hotel, Spa & Garden & Nayara Springs Breakfast

One full days in Arenal.

Day 9
San José, Costa Rica
International Airport Breakfast

Depending on your international flight departure time, today you will meet your Spanish speaking driver and depart by minivan for a land transfer back to the International Airport in San Jose (3 – 3.5-hour drive). Excellent accomodation and tours

Costa Rica Expeditions is a first class operation. Their guide Donald at the Montverde Lodge and Gardens was amazing. We saw many species of birds and mammals that we would not have seen had he not been along to point then out to us. Very professional, polite and well versed in the ecology of Costa Rica. Excellent English as well. All transfers from one location to another were executed perfectly. Always on time and safe. Most drivers spoke a fair amount of English and were only too glad to stop to point out sights or to stop for a photo. shoot. The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was very comfortable and the restaurant El Jardin was great as well. Loved the whole experience.
