Their reserve is located at the foothills of the Talamanca Mountains in the south of Costa Rica, a remote area that has served them well for centuries, most notably in their defeat of Spanish colonists in the 1500’s. Borucas have a rich cultural heritage and work hard to retain their traditions; they are wood carvers, creating intricate and symbolic masks which when decorated are used in their dances to ward off evil. They are weavers, using wool, which is dyed using native plants; they are craftsmen, making drums out of cedar and cowhide and the village elders still speak their native language. They are people of the land; they grow rice, beans, coffee, cacao, corn, tomatoes, and they raise cows, pigs, goats and chicken, but only enough to feed their families. Every New Year they celebrate their grandest festival - The Baile con Diablitos or Dance with the Devil – where they honor their ancient legends, bringing to life folklore in the form of dance and music and re-enacting their victory fight against Spanish influence. They proudly wear their intricately carved and painted masks during all festivities.

They will proudly welcome you and while there, you will learn about the history and traditions of this victorious tribe of people. You will see how they make their intricate crafts; have the opportunity to get involved in their creations yourself. You will see the different family farms and see how they live off their land and you will hear their legends and tales passed down through generations. During your visit, you will enjoy a Boruca cultural show and have typical lunch in their company by the river they hold sacred, with views of a majestic waterfall. The pride and passion the Borucas have for their ancestral heritage is palpable and you will depart feeling you have made new friends with one of the last indigenous tribes of Costa Rica.

this trip had a more difficult aspect in that the destinTion was in a very remote spot. It required an overnight stay enroute. All flights and transfers proceeded smoothly. The accomodations were as advertised. The only glitch was that no boarding pass was provided for leg of return flight. It turns out, none was needed, but that was not explained ahead of time.

Swiss Travel helped our travel agent coordinate a nearly 2 week trip in Costa Rica.  A representative met us at the airport, gave us our final itinerary, introduced us to the driver who would be taking us to our first destination, and then checked on us intermittently throughout the trip.  All the drivers and guides who we met were professional and helpful.  While we never needed to contact someone from Swiss Travel for additional assistance, it was comforting to know that we had local contacts in the event of an emergency.

Before this trip I had no idea what Costa Rica travel would be like. On arrival to the country SWISS TRAVEL was there with a smile. These people are first class. Driving through the country to our destinations their personal attention was immeasurable. Every time we had a transfer to an excursion or new hotel they were prompt, polite and engaging. We even made a request to stop at a Supermarket which they did!!! Love and thankfulness to all my Swiss Travel people!

These guys were the ultimate professionals. They are always punctual and provide very comfortable vehicles. Since my main bag didn't arrive with me, they didn't hesitate to stop at a suitable place so I could purchase a few things that I would need to get by. They made themselves available for language translation and anything else we needed. They gave us as much information along the way as we wanted. They were friendly and made us feel very welcome in their country. I'd highly recommend them.
