Itinerary

DAY LOCATION(S) HOTEL MEALS DESCRIPTION
Day 1
Yalushima, Japan
Sankara Hotel & Spa Dinner

Yakushima is a subtropical island located in the Southern area of Kyushu. Due to its geography and natural beauty, the island is a real paradise for hiking and outdoor enthusiasts.

This remarkable tiny little island is blanketed by an extensive cedar forest, and its giant trees --some of which are thousands of years old, are an impressive sight. Their presence and distinct scent will awaken the senses, contributing to its magical and mysterious atmosphere.

Located within a protected National Park, Yakushima has been declared a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site and constitutes a unique area of almost completely untouched nature and wilderness in Japan.

Upon arrival, a private driver will escort to Sankara Hotel and Spa where the rest of the day will be open to settle in and relax.

For dinner, enjoy a savory fine dining experience at an exclusive welcome dinner prepared by Sankara’s own chef. Dinner will feature local cuisine which entirely consists of seasonal ingredients and unique flavors which best represent the island. After dinner and some time to relax, get a restful sleep at the hotel.

Day 2
Yakushima, Japan
Sankara Hotel & Spa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Spend day two trekking the magical terrain of Mt. Kuromidake alongside an English-speaking guide. The 10-kilometre route can be traversed in around 8 hours and is an easy-to-intermediate path suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers alike. From the mountaintop there are breathtaking panoramic views of the island, its mountains, forests and coastlines.

During the hike, a few stops will be made in idyllic locations to rest and absorb the natural vistas that surround the trail. A longer break will be taken at the top of the mountain for lunch. Lunch will consist of a homemade bento (lunch box), prepared with local delicacies from the island that are as flavorful as they are healthy.

The itinerary is entirely flexible and can be altered to accommodate any other sites within the city.

Time:

Start (guided tour): 09:00 or 09:30

Duration: 8hrs

Overnight in Tokyo at Sankara Hotel & Spa 5 Stars (Deluxe)

Day 3
Yakushima, Japan
Sankara Hotel & Spa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The third day of this tour will be spent being lavishly pampered after yesterday’s invigorating trek. Enjoy a full day at the spa or at leisure stroll around the Sankara grounds.

This spa experience is custom tailored and treatments are designed to provide the best possible results for individuals. Spa treatment rooms are spaciousja, fragrant, and provide an idyllic space for calm and healing with private rooms available.

Alternatively Itinerary:

Enjoy another day of hiking accompanied by the English-speaking guide. For some variety, this hike will follow the paths inside Yakushima’s dense forests and is less physically demanding.

Immersed in lush vegetation with equally beautiful views, absorb the sights, sounds, and fragrances of nature. The island’s enormous ancient cedar trees, often covered in green moss, create a unique sense of mystery and wonder.

During today’s hike, pass by the infamous Buddha sugi (1,800 years old) and Yamato sugi --two ancient cedars, which are 1,800 and 3,000 years old respectively.

Once again, take a rest for lunch and enjoy another delicious home-made bento.

Upon completion of this hike through the woods, a guide lead the way back to the hotel.

Trekking information:

Duration: 7-8 h

Distance: 8 km

Altitude: 1000-1200 m

Further options – Explore the Seas of Yakushima:

Not only a paradise for mountain and forest adventures, Yakushima is also the ideal place for marine activities; depending on the season, a wide range of marine activities such as sea kayaking, fishing, stand up paddle boarding, snorkelling and scuba diving can be arranged.

Day 4
Yakushima, Japan
Sankara Hotel & Spa Breakfast, Lunch

Before leaving Yakushima this afternoon, there will still be time for some exciting activities and enjoyment of the island’s natural beauty.

Accompanied by a local guide, the morning will be spent visiting the Anbo River for a few hours of river kayaking. The tranquility of this calm river make it safe, even for absolute beginners.

Enjoy the beautiful vistas of the island from the river and keep an eye out for monkeys on the shore, as well as turtles swimming in the river.

After a bento lunch, head back to Yakushima’s airport or port by private car to continue on to the next adventure!

Loved the thoughtful details

We LIVED by the adorable booklet of our itinerary - we must have pulled it out 3 times a day. Very convenient to have in a compact form. Lots of thoughtful touches - small umbrellas on arrival (it was the rainy season), confirmation from guides, graphic booklet explaining transportation system and how to read a train ticket. I would recommend their services highly.

Fantastic service and attention to detail. All travel tickets and passes were carefully prepared and made it easy for us as first-time visitors to get around the country and visit popular as well as more off-the-beaten-path locations.

Travel in Japan

EXO Travel, in concert with our travel consultant, made our travel in Japan go smoothly with arranged personal tour guides, reserved seats on trains and opportunities for unique experiences like an ikebana class or a suma wrestling demonstration. The information they provided both with their Self Guide App and with the printed material they had waiting for us upon arrival at our Tokyo hotel was interesting and helpful. I became ill while in Tokyo and EXO Travel was extremely attentive and helpful in helping me get care and in helping to alter our itinerary. It was reassuring to have someone in-country to consult with during that time. We would highly recommend working with them!
