Luxury Onsen and Snow Monkeys (3 days)

EXO Travel - Japan

Shibu Onsen, Japan To Shibu Onsen, Japan

Valid for Departures Now Through: 31 Dec 2018

Day 1
Shibu Onsen, Japan
Kokuya Ryokan Dinner

Meet with the private driver this morning at the hotel and transfer to Tokyo Station. Board the iconic Hokuriku bullet train to Nagano, and travel in style with gran class seats, comparable to first class plane tickets and their elite service. Upon arrival, meet the private driver and transfer to the small town of Shibu Onsen.

Kokuya is a time-honoured Japanese hotel (Ryokan) with a 400-year-old history. With the current owner representing the 16th generation to manage Kokuya, the hotel radiates class and tradition. The Kokuya has six different, 100% natural hot springs, that are rich in therapeutic minerals benefitting muscles, joints, and skin.

Kokuya is located on the Shibu Onsen ‘spa street’, featuring nine public onsen. Be sure to notice the typical scenery, full of locals in their yukata, -light robes as they head for a soothing bath nearby.

At dinnertime, enjoy a kaiseki, -a Japanese traditional meal, consisting of eleven dishes. Made up of seasonal ingredients, only the freshest local Nagano products are used in its preparation.

Distance and journey time (approximation):

JR Tokyo Station to Shibu Onsen (by train and car): 2.5 hours

Overnight in Shibu Onsen at Kokuya Ryokan 5 Stars (Deluxe)

Day 2
Shibu Onsen, Japan
Kokuya Ryokan Breakfast, Dinner

After a rich Japanese breakfast, meet the guide and private driver. Transfer to Jigokudani Park, home to the famous Snow Monkeys. Jigokudani, or ‘hell’s valley’ is named for the clouds of steam and boiling water that shoots from the frozen ground.

It is in these hot spring baths that the endemic Macaques like to soak. Going to the park from the nearest bus stop and parking lot can only be done on foot, requiring a half-hour trek. Comfortable footwear is strongly recommended, along with warm clothes (especially during the colder months).

Observe the monkeys from up close, as they routinely ignore their human guests and go about their business. Living in large social groups, it can be quite entertaining to watch their interactions. Although the monkeys live in the area all year round, they are particularly numerous during the colder months of December until April.

In the afternoon, visit the charming town of nearby Obuse. Over a hundred houses participate in the ‘Open Garden’ project, which means that if a house displays a certain sign, visitors may freely enter the property and enjoy the gardens. A great way to admire the art of Japanese gardening.

Obuse is also the home of Hokusai, the famous woodblock painter who created masterpieces like ‘The Great Wave of Kanagawa’ and Masuichi-Ichimura, the local sake brewery that produces high quality sake.

Distance and journey time (approximation):

Loved the thoughtful details

We LIVED by the adorable booklet of our itinerary - we must have pulled it out 3 times a day. Very convenient to have in a compact form. Lots of thoughtful touches - small umbrellas on arrival (it was the rainy season), confirmation from guides, graphic booklet explaining transportation system and how to read a train ticket. I would recommend their services highly.

EXO Travel handled all of our tours while on a 10 day Japan adventure. We had four different tour guides and they were all great. Friendly, on-time, and very knowledgable about Japan. Would use them again.
