Description

Welcome to Auckland, New Zealand. With an easy overnight flight from the west coast of the USA or Canada, guests arrive in the early morning with a full day ahead for relaxation.

The Maori call this land Tāmaki Makaurau. Translated it means ‘a maiden desired by 100 lovers’. It was a place sought after by many and fought over its vast riches, including it forested hills, productive volcanic soil and harbours full of seafood.

As a city surrounded by water and amongst rich fertile soils and a temperate climate, Auckland produces some of the finest fresh produce in the world and along with superb wine regions and dedicated artisans makers, it is a city with a wealth of epicurean delights!

For clients keen to tempt their taste buds in Auckland’s food scene, a half day or full day food tour is ideal.

The BIG Foody offer clients a variety of food tour experiences. From fish market auctions, or a ‘Tastebud Tour’ where clients can visit local producers, to tasting the best that the city’s finest purveyors of artisan products and sweet delights, there is plenty on offer

Or for a special experience, you can even combine a sailing on the Waka Quest. The tour is not only insightful, but also complemented by traditional and new Maori cuisine including hangi fare, seafood and native herbs and spices.

For those clients travelling north, Matakana is an easy 40 minutes north of Auckland. It is also one of our 3 wine regions, and is home to over 30 boutique vineyards, olive groves and restaurants.

Matakana’s beautiful beaches, boutique vineyards and local arts scene make this region a divine destination. A perfect area to stop whilst travelling north to Northland and the Bay of Islands. Clients can stroll through the specialist shops in the picturesque village centre.

If clients happen to be travelling through this area on a Saturday morning, a must visit is the superb Matakana Farmers’ Market on the river’s edge for gourmet goodies featuring locally grown food and produce.

From 8am to 1pm, year round, the vibrant Farmer’s Market is a focal point for locals and growers to meet. Luscious produce from the area fills the stalls.

Matakana is a great place to call in and visit for those clients who are self driving to Northland.

Further north but still within Matakana, Pakiri Beach Horse Rides is an easy 90 minutes from downtown Auckland city, less than 2 hours from Auckland International Airport and just minutes from Matakana Coast Wine Country.

Pakiri Beach Horse Rides believe it is their privilege to be caretakers to the unpopulated, pristine and private Pakiri Beach, a 15 km (or 9.5 miles) white sand surf beach touching the majestic Pacific Ocean.

Sharing the splendid isolation and beauty of this place guests will see the rare and endangered NZ dotterels and fairy terns as well as other birds such as the blue heron, the variable oyster catcher and many others.

Accommodation: Takatu Lodge

Clients can chose to stay within Matakana should they so wish. It is a unique experience to stay in luxury accommodation on a working vineyard where guests may enjoy the highest standards of elegance and comfort. High vaulted macro carpa ceilings, open log fires inside and out, a cosy library and outside landscaped rooms are a few of the many architectural features.
