Description

An island of rich Chinese heritage, Penang has an array of temples, ruins, museums, preserved forests, and beautiful beaches that make for a memorable day. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town of Georgetown sits on the northeastern coast of the district of Penang and is one of Malaysia's most visited cities. It was founded in 1786 by Captain Frances Light as a base for the British East India Company in the Malay states. And the town itself was named for Prince of Wales and quickly developed into a hub of economic and cultural success.

What is so wonderful about Georgetown is the mix of cultures. Along the "Road of Harmony" you will see Christian churches, Chinese temples, and Muslim mosques, a demonstration of the fusion of backgrounds that is the basis for the country yet today. A visit to the Penang Museum will be very informative and your guide will point out the photographs and charts it houses.

A stop at Wat Chayamangkalaram is a must. Most popularly known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, this is the largest Buddhist temple in Penang. Its name means auspicious victory and the building, which dates back to 1845, houses a 108 ft. Buddha in a reclining position that is covered in gold leaf. Magnificent is the only word to describe this. A day in Georgetown must include Gurney Drive, otherwise known as Persiaran Gurney. This is perhaps one of the most well-known places in Penang. Often referred to as ‘The New Esplanade’ (to differentiate it from the original Esplanade in Georgetown), Gurney Drive is a deluge of hawker delights and exciting restaurants that come alive at nighttime, giving the unique experience of dining by the sea. Gurney Drive was named after Sir Henry Gurney, a Malayan High Commissioner who was assassinated by the guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party during the Emergency period in the early 1950s. Your walk down the promenade will be less crowded than it would during the evening hours but still expect some vendors showing their wares.

Finally, two more important highlights in Georgetown will complete the excursion. Founded by the British in 1884, the Penang Botanic Gardens remain a lush preserve of floral and fauna. Known particularly for its waterfall, it is a lovely stop. And as you return to your starting point, you will receive the history of the E & O Hotel, the grande dame of Penang's hotel properties. The Eastern and Oriental is still the premier property but also one of historic background. This is THE place to stay when you return.

Before returning, you we will have the opportunity to experience the typical local Indian Banana leaf set lunch.

In Cozumel we enjoyed the snorkeling that we did off a catamaran. The staff was friendly, very professional, and helpful with my first time snorkeling daughter. Grand Cayman we went to sting ray city with a trip and snorkeling. Staff and trip was amazing, crew very helpful and fun. in Jamaica we did a Dunn's River Falls excursion and private beach. We had fun but were not impressed with the staff, and their timeliness (waited around alot),

MOSTLY EXCEPTIONAL

We did a private whale watching tour which was incredible. The train ride in Sitka which we were not going to do at first was spectacular. Scenery, comfort - a wonderful way to see the area and spend our time. We signed up for a Mendenhall Glacier trip plus Salmon bake. This one was so very commercial and although the glacier and waterfall were above our expectations, a short time was given to walk there and view. This left out two of our party as they could not move as fast as needed to return in the time frame of one hour. Then the BAKE- the food was marginally ok. They were out of the most important SMORES ingredients. It is crazy but that was advertised (we were willing to break our diets ) and we looked forward to them and then disappointed. The people were nice. the area was pretty but that one I would strongly advise friend not to sign up for.

Summer Hawaii Cruise

By: CGreene

I arranged a church group of 55 for a Hawaiian cruise. This was our first time to use ShoreTrips and we had VIP treatment as compared to the mega busloads arriving from the ship/hotels excursions. Many times we had a site all to ourselves and then were leaving when the larger groups arrived. With all of the excitement about the active volcano, we weren't sure what to expect when we arrived on the Big Island. Those taking the helicopter ride raved about the experience and others were amazed to truly explore, taste and see that there is much more to her than only the volcanos. Every guide was lovely and professional, in fact, when I asked my group of to each submit 2 of their personal favorite photos, one was a guide on the last day in Honolulu for the private Pearl Harbor/airport excursion. It was nice to choose a selection of excursions for my group and ShoreTrips truly worked hard to make every trip come to fruition. Highly recommend all types of excursions with them.
