Your tour begins with a scenic trip into the city, bringing you to several key points throughout Dunedin, which was once the leading industrial and commercial center in New Zealand. Many of its original Edwardian and Victorian buildings are still fully functioning today. The University of Otago represents the oldest university in the country and Baldwin Street stands as the "steepest street in the world." These legendary spots will be your first before arriving at the Historic Dunedin Railway Station. "Masterpiece" is a strong word, but we aren't afraid to use this term for its design. The incredible detail paid by "Gingerbread" George Troup makes this the most celebrated building in the city. Not far away is the city center, which locals refer to as "The Octagon." It's literally an eight-sided plaza that serves as the focal point of the city's main streets, as well as its side streets, and is lined with bars and cafes. It is, without a doubt, the place to be.
At the famous Lanarch Castle, you will have the chance to grab something to eat, explore the gardens, or climb to the top lookout for some great views of the Otago harbor. The beautiful grounds aren't just a few potted plants and some brick staircases. Considered by New Zealand as a garden of international significance, there is plenty to see while walking through the Patterned Garden, the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, the Rain Forest, the South Seas Garden, the Alice Lawn, and the Laburnum Arch and Green Room. Gardens among gardens!
We'll save the cutest for last with a visit to the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Reserve, where a series of viewing points will allow you to observe these critically endangered animals. These are arguably the rarest penguins in the world! At Taiaroa Head, get your camera ready to snap shots of the northern royal albatross, who can often be seen gliding around the headland. These massive birds have chosen the tip of the peninsula to breed and your guide will tell you exactly why.
