The Maghain Aboth Synagogue was the first to be constructed and opened for services in 1878. One hundred years after its construction, celebrations were underway to mark a century of existence with an appearance by Singapore's first chief minister, David Marshall, one of Singapore's best criminal lawyers and a key member in the community. Today, the synagogue continues to serve the entire community and remains a focal point of religious events.
Diversity within the Jewish community led to the creation of the Chesed-El synagogue in 1905. This was the second synagogue constructed by Sir Manasseh Meyer, a poor Jewish immigrant who rose to fortune within Singapore as a trader and real estate owner. He was even knighted in 1925!
