After a pickup in Akaroa, you will start your journey to Christchurch. Along the way, you will witness some of the best views in all of New Zealand. We aren't kidding! Lookouts over the Akaroa and Lyttelton Harbors will end up being some of your favorite photos from the day. Especially if you are lucky enough to capture sheep in the foreground. You can try to "baaaahhhh" at them to set up the perfect shot, but we can't make any promises that they will cooperate.
Once in Christchurch, you'll explore the commercial city center and residential neighborhoods. The day is yours and the itinerary is flexible, so feel free to tell your guide about your interests. Buildings in transition--from being cleaned up, reinforced, or rebuilt--still line the streets, providing an amazing visual of how destructive the earthquake truly was. With resolve-testing events often comes a stronger community with unique solutions, as evidenced by the Re-build shopping area and the Cardboard Cathedral.
The Re-build shopping area was a quirky morale booster constructed by using shipping containers as storefronts for cafes and retail shops. This area provided residents a spot to escape the impact of the earthquake and come together at a central spot for entertainment. People loved it so much that it continues to be one of the most trafficked areas in the city. With many of the city’s churches unusable from the earthquake, a new cathedral was created in Latimer Square by a Japanese architect named Shigeru Ban. The unique aspect of this, which is hard to believe even when you are there, is the fact that it was created with cardboard and can amazingly seat 700 people.
