As you retrace key sites of Jewish cultural life in Lisbon, this tour allows you to get a sense of both the towering feats of the Lisbon Jews and the huge hardships they faced. Your guide starts off your day by offering a general overview of the captivating history of the Jews of Lisbon. You’ll then take a short walk through the city center and make your way to the site of the 1506 Jewish Massacre near the Church of São Domingos. The next stop is a more lighthearted one. At the Castle of Saint George, a must-see in Lisbon, you’ll enjoy some of the finest panoramic views in the city. From here, your guide will escort you through Alfama, one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters on the Mediterranean. A labyrinthine district filled with dense alleyways and Lisbon’s signature red tile roofs, Alfama has been called the “soul of Lisbon.” You’ll then take a stroll through Commerce Square, where thousands of Jews were forced to be baptized in the 15th century. You’ll end on a more upbeat note, with a visit to the renowned Synagogue of Lisbon (Shaare Tikva).
