No worries if you don't know what any of this means, other than the fact that it probably helps the boat move in the water. The art of sailing is a beautiful thing and there isn't a more beautiful place to experience it firsthand than off the shores of Akaroa. Your all Kiwi crew will help you navigate around the blue harbor, teaching you everything you need to know about life as a sailor. Feel free to offer up some help and test your own skills under their guidance for a chance to see if you're a natural seaman. At the very least, you can snap a picture in front of the steering wheel to show your friends back home. They won't know the difference.
Your journey will be a 360 degree tour of Akaroa harbor while learning about wildlife, geology, and local history. Wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed, but you may come across the rare Hector's dolphin, Little Blue Penguins, cormorants, shags, albatross, and fur seals. No noise from an engine lets you slow down and appreciate one of the most beautiful harbors in New Zealand. On top of the beauty of the open water, you will pass local industry points like paua and salmon farms, while learning about everything from the local Maori history to the "secret" American submarine that once patrolled these very waters.
Maybe next time you will trade your cabin in the cruise ship for a cabin in a sail boat in an attempt to venture out on your own!
