And it is made even more intriguing by its myths and legends. The name Langkawi combines the Malaly words helang (eagle) and kawi (strong) hence the eagle is the symbol for the island. Its breathtaking scenery, rustic ambience enhanced by its marine life and spectacular limestone formation makes this island an idyllic retreat. Langkawi is also listed under UNESCO on the list of Geo Forest Park for the oldest rock formation and its rich biodiversity of fauna and flora.
You will visit Gunung Machinchang, and have a chance to take the Langkawi Cable Car, where you will find stunning views of the island. Here you will see that there is more jungle than you might have imagined. Though the cable car takes 15 minutes each way, you will want to spend time at the top absorbing the scene.
See the Mahsuri Tomb, which carries a story that has more than 7 versions. The Mahsuri legend has become something of a cultural icon for Malaysians. Your guide will relay his/hers! You will also visit the Batik Village, which is not only interesting but will allow you to purchase souvenirs that are particularly exclusive and for which it is famous.
Also see Kuah Town, once a fishing village and now the capital of Langkawi. Still charming, it also has a bustle of commerce at its port. And then see the Langkawi Crocodile Farm, which houses one of the largest numbers of crocodile and alligator species gathered together in the world.
