This excursion begins at the port, so peddling along the shoreline will get you acclimated quickly if you haven't ridden in awhile. Enjoy riding around the remnants of the medieval walls that once stood to protect the old city, always fascinating to imagine. As you begin to work your way into the new part of the city, you will join the Lungomare Nazario Sauro, a seafront promenade that delivers a great surface for biking. You are headed for a small fishing village called Torre a Mare, town of the sea, and here you will be ready for a stop with something to quench your thirst.
You will retrace the last part of your ride but that's ok as you are viewing everything from a different angle, making a stop at Pomodoro Beach. If you want, take a dip in the Adriatic. The sun will dry you before you are ready to move along to the walled old town. Now comes the fun - as you zig-zag your way through the narrow lanes, arches greeting you along the way.
City sights are now the goal, with viewing of the Byzantine castle and the famous Basilica de San Nicola, dedicated to St. Nicholas who inspired the modern-day Santa Claus!
