Currently Jewish life in St. Petersburg is quite vibrant. There are several organizations like Eva, Adain Lo and Yesod, that run social, educational and welfare programs. You will visit one of these as well as the second largest synagogue in Europe, the Choral Synagogue which is where the heart of the limited religious life is located. During your visit to this neighborhood, called the Kolomna, you will be able to chat with the Rabbi, the Cantor or local Jews. A plaque at the entrance of the synagogue honors those families, including the Ginsburgs and the Polyakoffs, who have been instrumental in maintaining the Jewish traditions here. Also a little known plaque commemorating the birth place of ORT in the world, which occurred in 1880. Also see the house where Shneur Zalman, a founder of Chabad Hasidism, lived and learn about his imprisonment.
Another highlight is the Jewish Exposition of the Enthnography Museum, which highlights the Ashkenazi Jews. Beautiful religious artifacts, times used during the religious ceremonies or for protecting the scrolls of the Torah demonstrate the many facets of Jewish artistic traditions.
