Next, visit the quaint town of Girdwood for the aerial tram ride up the longest double black diamond ski slope in North America. From the top, you can view several glaciers, the northern-most temperate rainforest, and on select days visit the Roundhouse Museum. This museum is perched on the mountainside and surrounded with one continuous viewing deck for your pleasure.
After descending the tram, we’ll stop for lunch (included) at our favorite Bake Shop for bottomless homemade soup, sourdough bread, beverages, and dessert. Next, visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, located on 140 acres at the southern edge of Turnagain Arm. AWCC provides care and rehabilitation for injured and orphaned wildlife, as well as wildlife education and awareness. Animals that are unable to survive in the wild are given refuge in the center's spacious habitats. Here, people can safely get close, observe, and photograph some of Alaska's largest land animals, including moose, bison, elk, deer, caribou, bear, musk ox, small mammals, and birds of prey.
Next we will continue into Portage Valley. Several Alpine glaciers can be seen here and, depending on the season, you may be able to view salmon spawning in one of the small creeks! Finally, enjoy a ride through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest one-way tunnel in North America, 2.5 miles! It is the first tunnel designed for -40° F. and 150 mph winds, and railroad tracks run right down the middle of the road for a shared use roadway. The tunnel is located 50 miles southeast of Anchorage, near Portage Glacier, and connects the port city of Whittier on Prince William Sound to the Seward Highway and Southcentral Alaska. It opened to vehicle traffic on June 7, 2000, after extensive conversion from a World War II railroad tunnel.
As you arrive in Whittier, you'll be transferred directly to your cruise ship and helped with off-loading of your luggage.
