Koper is Slovenia's largest coastal town and will likely be the most unique stop on your trip. This small city in the "Slovenian Riviera" has a population of just over 45,000 citizens and represents one of the most tight knit communities on the Adriatic Sea. With both Slovene and Italian as its official languages you will notice Slovenia's prideful culture fused with the history of neighboring Italy.
Your walking tour will start with a visit to the Regional Museum of Koper. Dive into the history of the Primorska region which settles in Slovenia's portion of the Istria peninusula. Everything you need to know about the area's history is covered in a series of buildings which focus on archaeology, art, culture, international relationships and ethnology. From Baroque to Contemporary you will get an inside look at an intriguing region few know very much about it.
After the museum you will make your way to historical Tito's Square which is home to Koper's most well known monument, the Praetorian Palace and Cathedral. This 13th century Venetian Gothic palace is home to the Koper city government and dominates your attention in the square with its two towers, one on each end. With 3 million euros spent on renovations since 1991 the Praetorian Palace continues to serve as the face of Koper's infrastructure. If you are up for it make sure to request a walk up the 204 step Bell Tower to take in the best views of the port!
At Carpaccio square you will be in the heart of Koper's old town which was named after famous italian painter Vittore Carpaccio. The talking points of this area start at the column of Saint Justine which serves as a memorial for Kopers contribution to the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 where Turkey was defeated by European forces. This naval battle represented one of the biggest defeats of the Ottoman empire and prevented them from flanking Europe along the Mediterranean. At the Almerigogna Palace you will see what many consider the most beautiful building in Koper. With its gothic design and union between two historic buildings you will see why this building is one of a kind in Slovenia.
Your walking tour will end in perfect fashion as you sample the wines, olive oils and cheese of the region!
