From the capital, we'll take you to the southwest side of the island where the UNESCO site, Hagar Qim Temple, has stood since 1000 BC. This temple is of particular interest as it has the largest and heaviest megaliths, some weighing a staggering 20 tons. It is an amazing feat to have constructed this at a time when our modern machinery was, of course, not available.
Continuing to the next stop, you'll get in touch with local culture at the village of Marsaxlokk. This lovely fishing village has changed little over the years. Its low buildings line the waterfront full of colorful boats called "luzzu," making for perfect photographs. A small market sits here and you can have a lovely lunch at a nearby restaurant which stocks the market's freshly caught fish.
Our final destination is Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta, which will bring you back to the 9th century. This city was built on a plateau in the center of the island, another incredible accomplishment. From the bastion walls, you'll see the entire island. Around you is a maze of narrow alleyways that bring you face-to-face with amazing architecture.
As you travel throughout the day, your guide will be a wonderful source of information.
Upon completion of your island tour, you'll be returned to the cruise ship pier or your hotel.
