We'll begin by venturing into the past with a tour of Destrehan Plantation, the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi River Valley. It was built in 1787 and remains a fine example of classic Southern elegance. Here, you'll be able to interpret the lives and lifestyles of the plantation's former residents (both free and enslaved), and see demonstrations of period crafts such as dying with indigo, candle making, and open-hearth cooking. Your tour will be guided, but you'll have some free time to roam on your own.
Next, we'll drive to a remote swamp for a thrilling high-speed ride onboard a small airboat, comfortably gliding over marshes deep into secluded bayous for approximately 2 hours. Your Cajun guide will explain all about alligator hunting and life on the bayou. Visions of swamp life, and probably some campy swamp movies, will undoubtedly rise to the forefront of your imagination.
At the conclusion of this fascinating tour, you'll be returned to your starting point, where you can search for a taste of alligator, if it suits you!
