Make your way through the city, stopping at the Basilica of St. Clare. Dedicated to St. Francis, one of Italy's most loved saints, the Basilica of St. Clare houses Italy's most important medieval art treasures. Pass the Piazza del Commune (Town Hall Square), the Palazzo del Popolo (People's Palace), and the Roman Temple dedicated to Minerva. You'll also visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where the small Portiuncola chapel stands, and, of course, the world-famous Basilica of St Francis.
Frescoes of the greatest painters of the 13th and 14th centuries have decorated every nook and cranny of this magnificent church, built under the direction of Brother Elias in 1228. The Basilica is made up of two churches: the Upper section is adorned by frescoes illustrating the life of St. Francis. The tomb of St. Francis, which you will also visit, is located in the lower part. The stark walls and simple furniture are in keeping with the simplistic ways of Francis and his followers.
